The Occupational Therapist is responsible for the provision of Occupational Therapy for the residents at Sunset Lodge and as such; develops and implements plans for the provision of Occupational Therapy services, and acts as a clinical consultant to the facility staff.

This position reports directly to the Director of Care.

HOURS:

  • 15 hours per week
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops, implements and monitors Therapeutic services for the residents by:
  • Maintains the mission and philosophy of Sunset Lodge.
  • Conducting resident assessments and evaluations to determine their physical condition, limitations, medical histories and personal goals.
  • Communicating with physicians and other health care providers to confirm plans of care.
  • Advising family members and other supportive individuals about the level of care the resident needs.
  • Providing occupational therapy guidance, support and education during resident sessions.
  • Teaching residents how to interact with adaptive technology and showing them how to use assistive devices.
  • Assisting residents with purchasing products to help them achieve their goals.
  • Consulting and communicating with external community agencies to access prescribed equipment for residents.
  • Participating as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Referring residents to agencies and services may improve the resident's level of function, enhance their quality of life and assist with financial concerns as needed.
Acts as a liaison and provides services for families and the community by:
  • Facilitating educational opportunities for residents' families, friends and caregivers.
  • Maintains links with relevant community organizations and provides appropriate outreach support.
Acts as a resource to facility staff by:
  • Planning and delivering in-service education sessions for other members of the health care team as required.
  • Participating as a member of appropriate facility committees.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience
  • Graduated from a program in Occupational Therapy recognized by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy (CAOT). Current practicing registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sound interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Knowledge of software applications, particularly word-processing, Excel and e-mail
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary health care team whose members have diverse backgrounds and often competing priorities.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities and meet deadlines with a minimum of supervision.
Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean driver's abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
