Air Line Pilots Association, Int\'l.ResponsibilitiesOccupational Health & Safety SpecialistThe Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world, seeks an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist for our office in Ottawa, Ontario. ALPA represents more than 77,000 pilots at 42 airlines in Canada and the United States. The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating the delivery of services provided by the following ALPA Canada Pilot Groups and their Committees including, but not limited to, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and ALPA\xe2\x80\x99s Air Safety Organization (ASO), including Pilot Assistance. They work directly with staff and appointed Committee Chairs to ensure that regular communications with the Directors, ALPA Canada and Engineering and Air Safety, and Committee Chairs are maintained and that the services of the Committees are aligned with the overall strategic aims and objectives of ALPA and its MECs.They prepare comments on legislative and proposed amendment initiatives pertaining to Aviation Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and may prepare testimony for presentation in Ottawa. Similarly, they represent member interests in industry participation groups such as the Canadian Aviation Regulation Advisory Council (CARAC).Working with their department management and colleagues, along with members of the ASO, they work to advance ALPA\xe2\x80\x99s policies, initiatives, and goals in the areas of OHS and Pilot Assistance.   • Bachelor\'s degree in relevant area, e.g., Occupational Health and Safety or other related discipline, from an accredited college or university required; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical aeronautical experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) recognized certification in Occupational Health and Safety Training with extensive knowledge and experience in Occupational Health & Safety issues required.
  • Thorough understanding of OH&S laws, practices, and relevant regulations for Canada and its provinces and territories strongly preferred.
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in similar roles required, ten (10) or more strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of the aviation industry, the commercial piloting profession, or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge/understanding of various legislative processes, Canada Labour Code-Part II, Occupational Health and Safety, Aviation Occupational Safety and Health, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), and the like, required.
  • Knowledge of government and regulatory affairs is beneficial.
  • Ability to conduct Occupational Health & Safety research, communicate complex technical issues in a simple and understandable way, and make presentations to staff and committee representatives.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Strong time management skills; able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; and, transition easily between projects.
  • Solid conflict resolution, problem solving, negotiation, and mediation skills.
  • Solid technical writing and public speaking skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, pilots, and external contacts.
  • Software: Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
