Job Overview
The Nutrition Advisor is responsible for developing weekly menus, facilitating cooking workshops, and delivering accessible, practical nutrition education to participants. This role focuses on building trusting relationships with families, empowering them with the skills and confidence needed to make sustainable, positive changes in their health and lifestyle. The Nutrition Advisor plays a key role in delivering the nutritional components of the CAPC & CPNP programs Safe Food Handlers Certification, and partnerships with Niagara Region Public Health.
Responsibilities
Nutrition Education & Meal Preparation
Plan, prepare, and cook weekly menus and meals for all programs, providing participants with recipes to recreate at home.
Lead live cooking sessions featuring healthy, culturally appropriate, and budget-friendly meals using seasonal and commonly donated ingredients.
Encourage hands-on participation, allowing families to practice skills and ask questions in real time.
Teach essential techniques that build basic cooking skills, safe food handling practices, confidence in the kitchen, and practical meal-prep strategies.
Introduce participants to new foods and educate them on nutritional value, health benefits, and affordable substitutions (e.g., vegan, allergy-friendly, egg- or oil-free options).
Workshops & Demonstrations
Facilitate interactive caregiver workshops on nutrition, food safety, grocery budgeting, understanding food labels, meal planning, and ingredient substitutions.
Participate in food demonstrations and presentations for partnering agencies and programs (Outreach Classroom).
Provide practical resources such as recipes, healthy school lunch guides, and tips for using unfamiliar foods found in food bank boxes. Examples include programs like Trust Me, Trust My Tummy, Paint My Plate, and Better with Beans*.
Program Support & Community Engagement
Promote healthy eating habits and food safety as key components of a healthy lifestyle for families and children.
Build and maintain supportive, trusting relationships with families while helping create welcoming, safe environments that foster community connection and peer support.
Coordinate grocery pick-up and delivery for program needs.
Refer participants to community partners for additional resources and support as needed.
Support all program areas, emphasizing teamwork and collaboration.
Contribute to the promotion of programs, including presenting CAPC Niagara Brighter Futures to community partners to build awareness and strengthen partnerships.
Perform housekeeping tasks including cleaning, organizing, and disinfecting kitchen and snack areas.
Attend all required training and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of experience working with at-risk families.
Knowledge of child development (ages 0-6).
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Experience facilitating in group settings.
Safe Food Handlers Certification.
Required Standard First Aid and CPR
