The Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School is a Nursery to 6th Grade School at the University of Toronto. Our mission is to provide excellence in elementary education, teacher education, and research in an intentionally diverse environment.

Jackman ICS provides an environment that fosters research and professional inquiry. The School makes a significant contribution to the education, human development, and applied psychology work within our University and in the wider educational community in Canada and internationally.

The Lab School also serves a role in preparing pre-service teachers for their professional life through its contributions to the Jackman ICS Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program, providing both practicum experience, mentoring and course instruction by our teaching staff.

Your opportunity:
Working as part of a team of early childhood educators to provide a half-day program for 3 and 4 year-olds, the Nursery Assistant Teacher will be responsible for: the implementation of indoor and outdoor daily activities; ongoing supervision of classroom, playground, group and routine activities; developmental assessment of individual children based on observations; effective communication with parents and pre-service teachers by sharing daily information regarding children\xe2\x80\x99s activities, programs, special events; daily preparation of the playground and classroom; cleaning/organizing equipment and other areas of the classroom as needed and providing caregiving routines such as toileting, serving snacks, dressing children to go outside, etc.

The Nursery Assistant will also work with ECE staff in ensuring the overall health and safety of all children by maintaining a sanitary and safe environment; providing assistance with arranging children\xe2\x80\x99s play space to reflect the philosophy of the school and curriculum of the Nursery Program and buildingand maintaining responsive relationships with children.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing the delivery of developmentally appropriate early learning programming
  • Coordinating the preparation of space, materials and equipment required for daily programming activities
  • Modifying activities to support individual needs and learning styles
  • Assessing behavioural issues and reporting problems as required
  • Processing registrations
  • Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items
  • Assigning and checking the work of work-study students
Essential Qualifications:
  • Completed Ontario college diploma (2 years), Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) certification is required. Early Childcare Assistant (ECA) certification is an asset.
  • Minimum two years recent and relevant child care experience.
  • First Aid Certification required.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of child development when working in an early years\xe2\x80\x99 classroom setting, work in a busy environment, work in a team, take direction, solve problems on-the-spot, and care for children ages 2-4 years.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate play-based curriculum based on the observed interests of children.
  • Experience working with families.
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.
  • Intermediate skills with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, families and team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, flexibility and judgment when handling unpredictable situations.
  • A committed team player who provides a supportive work environment for staff while providing a high quality of programming standards for children.
  • Ability to work independently as well as contributes as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
