To provide reproductive health care nursing to individuals undergoing fertility treatment. To promote safe exemplary patient care in all aspects of fertility investigation and management based on collaboration with an integrated multidisciplinary team. To promote health and decrease risk factors that may contribute to infertility. To provide care in accordance to each patient's cultural and spiritual needs. This unique role complements the provision of patient education and emotional support.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Quality of care:
Provides accurate and relevant health education using evidence-based practice
Keeps up to date of professional and technological development relevant to fertility and reproductive endocrinology
Delivers high quality patient care as per CNO standards and nursing practice competencies
Demonstrates skills and knowledge in clinical practice pertaining to fertility, treatment scheduling, consultation, health education, and health promotion
Provides patients with clear and concise information prior to commencement of their treatment plan
Coordinates IVF and non-IVF stimulation cycles
Provides medication teaching and safely administers medications within the nursing scope of practice
Provides patients with advice and support, as necessary, throughout their treatment
Provides emotional support in a culturally sensitive and unbiased manner
Schedules IVF and non-IVF procedures, utilizing eIVF
Interprets blood and ultrasound results and facilitates patient understanding of their progress
Translates complex medical information to help patients make informed decisions with regards to their treatment options
Ensure the rights, confidentiality, and privacy of the patient are protected at all times
Ensure patient's safety and wellbeing at all times
Active role in monitoring and improving patient safety as it applies to my duties and responsibilities
Performs duties and responsibilities according to relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines related to ART and third-party reproduction, including but not limited to Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHR Act), Health Canada Safety of Sperm and Ova Regulations, Public Health Ontario, CFAS, and ASRM
Communication:
Communicates with all members of the multidisciplinary team in a respectful and honourable manner
Uses effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to facilitate understanding within and between departments in order to provide optimal patient care
Communicates and liaise with medical staff from satellite units for cycle coordination and booking procedures
Communicates professionally utilizing phone and email correspondence with patients and their families, provides accurate medical instructions, and responds in a timely fashion to patients' questions and concerns
Exercises tact and compassion in dealing with patients and relatives in accordance with patient's cultural and spiritual needs
Documents concisely and legibly, as per CNO's Documentation standard
Personal and professional development:
Participate in training as required by CReATe Fertility Centre (WHIMS, infection control, hand hygiene, emergency response and disaster planning, and safety)
Maintains competency through education and research
Takes an active role in department policies, processes, and procedures by monitoring and maintaining standards of care in conjunction with other team members
Takes responsibility for own personal and professional growth as per CNO's QA.
General nursing responsibilities:
Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide optimum patient care
Practises evidence-based nursing, applying accepted and validated research
Practises in accordance with the code of ethics and standards as set by CNO, CFAS, and CReATe Fertility Centre
Exercises time management, prioritizing, and critical thinking with patient and non-patient responsibilities
Ensures that the correct control, storage, and administration of medications is undertaken in accordance with CReATe Fertility Centre's policies
Ensures accurate and safe reconciliation of medications at the end of each medication IVF and non-IVF stimulation cycle
Maintains the quality systems that pertain to the processes performed in the Cycle Monitoring Department
Attends and participate in departmental and organizational staff meetings
Adheres to the terms and conditions of employment as stated in the Employee Handbook
Reviews public health reports and other blood results, and communicates results to Knowledge and understanding of Health Canada regulations.
RN:
Performs controlled acts: Intrauterine Insemination (optional training)
Reviews public health reports and other blood results, and communicates results to patients
Expectations (RN & RPN):
The RN/RPN maintains competency through education and research
The RN/RPN practices in accordance with the code of ethics of the CNO, CNA, and CFAS
The RN/RPN must be willing to expend the role as the clinic adds additional treatment for patient care, under a supervised, safe, and competent manner
Willingness to maintain competency by attending courses and seminars, as recommended by the Cycle Monitoring Team Leader and Clinic Manager.
Qualifications
RPN
RPN - college diploma
Current CNO registration in good standing
Current RPNAO registration
Current CPR-level HCP, BCLS
Preferred - experience in fertility, gynecology, obstetrics, adult education
Preferred - advanced counselling and adult education skills
Preferred - member of CFAS, CFAS-NSIG.
RN
RN - BSc. N degree
Current CNO registration in good standing
Current RNAO registration
Current CPR-level HCP, BCLS, and ACLS (optional)
Preferred - experience in fertility, gynaecology, obstetrics, adult education
Preferred - advanced counselling and adult education skills
Preferred - member of CFAS, CFAS-NSIG.
Working Conditions
Full time, 40 hours per week, with flexibility for working weekends and holidays
The clinic is open 52 weeks per year, including weekends and holidays
Vacation planning is done in advance to ensure clinic coverage
