Temporary assignment- approximately 52 weeks

POSITION SUMMARY:

Men's Addiction Services and Womankind provide withdrawal management for 16 years and an older person's active substance abuse disorder/dependency, mental illness and/or other medical conditions.

The Nurse Practitioner for Withdrawal Management Services improves the medical management of clients who are withdrawing from substances and need access to primary care and/or medications to manage the symptoms of withdrawal.

The Nurse practitioner is an autonomous health care provider who works in collaboration with physicians, other members of the interdisciplinary team and clients/families to provide evidenced-informed and integrated care to clients in withdrawal management services. The NP's practice is grounded in professional, ethical and legal standards using advanced nursing knowledge, skills, experience, clinical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking. The NP builds and expands established competencies with an expanded scope of practice based on legislative authority to autonomously perform the controlled acts. The NP's fundamental competencies include clinical practice, leadership, research, consultation, and collaboration. All duties and responsibilities of the NP will be consistent with the Standards of Behavior and policies set by St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.

QUALIFICATIONS
-Bachelors Degree required with completion of NP program at the graduate level (Masters or Doctoral), from an approved academic facility OR Completion of NP-PHC program (Bacculaurate level ) prior to 2000 from an accredited university program and a Masters in Nursing (alternatively, Masters in relevant health care field)
-Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the RN (EC) class with no restrictions on registration or professional practice hearings pending. The CNO Registration is in the following specialities: NP Primary Health Care (NP-PHC)
-Current BCLS/HCP Certification required
-Canadian Nurses Association specialty certification may be required for specific clinical practice settings and patient/client populations
-Appointment or eligible for appointment with a School of Nursing in an academic institution
-Mandatory Liability Insurance that meets CNO requirements for NPs (=$5million dollar coverage per setting)
-Proof of successful completion of controlled substances education required
-Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) preferred
-Member of the Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario (NPAO) preferred
-Member of a professional association affiliated with a clinical or population specialty preferred
-Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated clinical experience and expertise working addiction population in an advanced practice role
-Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated clinical experience and expertise working in mental health specialty
-Minimum 2 years experience within a primary addiction setting preferred
-Demonstrated knowledge of the CNO standards of practice and guidelines and commitment to maintaining reflective practice
-CNA Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (CPMHN (c), or commitment to complete within 5 years of hire required
-Demonstrated in-depth expertise regarding clinical assessment and care needs of persons living with substance use, mental health diagnosis and disadvantaged populations, including homeless
-Demonstrated expertise in working from a harm reduction perspective including the prescribing of pharmacological interventions (suboxone, naltrexone)
-Comprehensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and other related legislation in Ontario required
-Demonstrated knowledge of legislative and ethical responsibilities relating to scope of practice and health care required
-Demonstrated self-directed decision making and problem solving required
-Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective collegial relationships and teamwork required
-Demonstrated effective conflict management /resolution skills required
-Ability to minimize risk adhering to established policies and procedures
-Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills (i.e.: PDM, Clinical Connect, MS office/outlook, EPIC, GENCAN etc.) required
-Demonstrated management for evaluation, interpretation and process change
-Demonstrated good attendance record required
-Must have a valid drivers license, ability to travel between two working sites

Withdrawal Management specific competencies:

-Retain clinical competence through relevant evidenced-based research and legislation
-Advance practice assessments and interventions for a diverse range of clients with addiction problems
-Assess and manages clients with addictions who have co=-existing health conditions including but not limited to mental health, medical disease
-Advanced health assessment to identify clients emotional, cognitive and behavioural states, as well as level of anxiety, crisis states, indices of aggression, self-harm, suicide, risk to others, competency to care for self and signs of substance abuse, addiction and withdrawal
-Provides care to persons experiencing an addiction and or mental health condition that is recovery oriented, trauma-informed, uses principles of harm reduction, and addresses social determinants of health.
-Provides education to individuals and families about addiction and its management
-Understands stigma as a barrier and assists and supports patients and families
-Acts as a resource providing addiction-related clinical advice for health and other professional, community groups and clients and their families
-Advocates for persons experiencing an addiction
-Identifies and seeks new knowledge, skills, and supports related to care of clients with addiction and/or mental health conditions
