Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled NP to provide expert clinical care in the Orthopaedic Surgery Team. The NP will act as one of the primary providers for orthopaedic patients by
providing seamless and planful connections between the Emergency Department (ED), Operating room (OR), ambulatory clinics, and inpatient care areas
across our orthopaedic service (spine, complex hip, fractures
).
The NP will work closely with nurses, orthopaedic staff surgeons, residents, fellows, orthopaedic technologists, other advanced practice providers, consulting medical services and allied health personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and family-centered perioperative care.
The NP will enhance team care by assessing and managing patients who visit the emergency department with active orthopaedic injuries, as well as those who are in immediate pre- and post-operative phases to support surgical preparation and recovery. They will play a
critical role in triaging patients for time-sensitive, appropriate pathways of care, focusing on patient safety and quality of care throughout
.
They will build strong relationships with patients, families, the complex care service, and fellow NPs.
Success will be reflected in enhancing patient safety and their care experience, optimizing consultation response times, length of stay, optimizing patient flow throughout the orthopaedic services, and fostering strong collaboration with other services.
Here's what you'll get to do
Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with orthopaedic injuries and conditions across inpatient units and ED
Act as a consultant for orthopaedic patients in the ED, providing expert clinical decision-making and guidance in collaboration with the surgical team
Provide timely and appropriate management to cover care gaps during hours when orthopaedic surgeons are prioritizing surgical cases
Coordinate referrals and follow-up care with orthopaedic surgeons and other relevant healthcare providers
Collaborate closely with orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, residents, and other services to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care
Develop, initiate, and oversee individualized plans of care in partnership with multidisciplinary teams
Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, and recovery processes
Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, and outcomes
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to optimizing patient flow and care standards
Mentor and coach nursing and interprofessional colleagues
Champion patient safety through Caring Safely initiatives and harm-reduction strategies
Apply and promote evidence-based practices and clinical innovations
Create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge using formal and informal channels.
Provide relevant health education to families that is based on their needs, learning styles and stage of development.
Provide leadership in the development and implementation of programming to effectively transition youth and their families to adult services.
Provide leadership in planning for successful transition of youth/families to adult programs outside of SickKids.
Connect families with community resources and assist in obtaining specialized equipment
Work Hours:
While scheduling will be developed to balance patient care demands as well as personal needs of the candidate, primary shifts will be in the afternoons, early evenings, and late evenings (e.g. 1200-2200h on M/W/F and/or 0800-2000h on Sat) to ensure continuous orthopaedic support across the care areas.
Here's what you'll need
Master of Nursing or equivalent, with a clinical focus
Near completion or Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program (within MN or post-master certificate)
Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario, within the RN (Extended Class) Completion of a Nurse Practitioner certification
Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience, experience as an NP an asset
Experience with Orthopaedic Surgery patient population is an asset
Proven ability in a leadership role
Ability to act as a change agent, and foster teamwork and consensus-building
Innovative critical thinking with excellent communication, public speaking and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of theoretical and conceptual frameworks and their practical application
