Demands, duties, qualifications


Definition of Work:






Reporting to the Director of Surgical and Ambulatory Services and working collaboratively with the OIAC team, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for providing professional, analytical and comprehensive health services to clients and patients including but not limited to health assessments and diagnosis diseases, disorders, injuries and conditions; treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses and identifying health risks and needs within a holistic model.



This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: Adult/Family All Ages. This is an advanced practice role within an inter-disciplinary team utilizing the standards of excellence for Total Joint Replacement/Orthopedic Surgery. The Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively with the members of the OIAC team and Orthopedic Surgeons to plan, develop, implement and evaluate the surgical preoperative education and optimization program for patients awaiting orthopedic surgery. The Nurse Practitioner will provide comprehensive education, evaluation and will promote surgical optimization and preventative health care practices and assist patients and families in adapting to the required treatment and lifestyle changes.




In this role the NP will work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary model of care, to identify patients requiring surgical optimization preoperatively and to support appropriate management and care of surgical patients along the entire orthopedic surgery patient pathway and non-surgical patients that are managed by their primary care provider.




The NP will promote preventative health care practices and assist patients and families in planning for and managing treatment and lifestyle changes, while considering and supporting a continuous improvement approach to quality care. Care to clients is delivered in an ambulatory outpatient setting. Client assessments may be completed in person or via virtual healthcare solutions. It will include individual assessments and delivery of service in group settings.



The roles and responsibilities in this position may expand in the future, within the scope of practice of a nurse practitioner.

Job Demands

Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs. and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books, supplies and may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs. Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks. When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, dopplers, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness. Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessment and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.

Required qualifications:





Graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by Central Health Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of NL and Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a Nurse Practitioner (Adult/Family All Ages) with the CRNNL Current BLS certification for health care providers from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Must have completed or be willing to complete the next available course of ACLS & EKG interpretation. Demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, problem-solving skills, organizational skills as well as oral and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to practice both independently and in collaboration with the other members of the interdisciplinary health care team Consistent demonstration of Central Health's corporate values; Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Stewardship and Quality. A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position. A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority


Preferred Qualifications:



* Minimum of two to five (5) years clinical experience in the last seven (7) working with adult acute care or primary care patients is required
