Make a difference in the lives of Albertans by joining the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Foothills Medical Centre, as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The Neurosurgery NP is a self-directed Advanced Practice Nurse who is educated at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. Reporting to the Neurosurgery NP Program Manager, the NP will provide general neurosurgical medical care to adult outpatients, with a continuity of care model to adult inpatients at the FMC. As one of Canada\'s largest hospitals, FMC provides advanced healthcare services to more than two million people from Calgary, southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia and southern Saskatchewan. The NP working with the Neurosurgery, supports neurosurgery patients at the FMC. These outpatient clinics and units provide care to patients who have are suffering from neurosurgical disorders through a collaborative multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, Clinical Nurse Educators, Nurse practitioners, Allied health professionals, fellows, and physicians. All disciplines work together to provide holistic care to the patient and their families. The successful incumbent must: Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills to enable working directly with patients and their family members and other members of the health care team; be able to work as a member of a team and also function independently; excel at working in a dynamic fast paced environment; demonstrate critical thinking, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills; flexibility in a dynamic role, where responsibilities may vary depending on the levels of learners on the team at any given time; demonstrate ongoing responsibility for maintaining own continuing professional and practice competencies through professional development activities.
Description:
The NP will perform advanced, focused and comprehensive health assessments & interventions, as well as order, interpret and perform diagnostic tests to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans. This will be done in collaboration with the attending physician, residents, and medical students. The NP plays a key role in coordination of complex neurosurgical care in both inpatient & outpatient settings. The NP is responsible for the continuous care of the patient & their family by conducting clinic assessments, investigation, management, medical documentation of assigned patients. The NP will both communicate assessment finding and/or diagnoses including outcomes and prognoses to patients/families in collaboration with the attending MD and residents and utilize complex reasoning reflective of expertise and education to safely coordinate and manage care for patients. The NP is expected to contribute to & create opportunities for team members to optimize knowledge, clinical skills, and client care. This includes the identification of opportunities to improve processes and practices. The NP is expected to participate in QI initiatives & take a leadership role in QI projects as identified by the Division head and operational managers. As an NP, opportunity exists to identify areas of research in the inpatient setting, participate in research projects in the clinical setting & promote the application of research and evidence in clinical practice. The NP will act independently & autonomously within their scope of practice. It is the inherent responsibility of the NP to keep updated on any changes to CRNA standards, guidelines, and policies.
