Description:
The ICU Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse who is prepared at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. The ICU NP demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in medical and surgical critical care as well as advanced assessment, diagnostics, and interventions for critically ill patients as part of the ICU team. The ICU NP role integrates aspects of nursing and medicine to coordinate the care of ICU patients. Collaboration between these two disciplines is a key component of the ICU NP role and utilizing the interdisciplinary team is vital to providing comprehensive care to patients. Providing access to care is a key function of the ICU NP role. Direct care is provided through application of knowledge in advanced assessment skills, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and applicable interventions. These capabilities support the development of differential diagnoses and need for further interventions. The role of the ICU NP will help provide continuity of care to more complex patients, the interdisciplinary team, and to families. This role also includes time for participation in relevant research and education. Education for bedside Registered Nurses (RNs), rotating medical residents and medical students is a component of this NP role. This is a zonal position with a future dual assignment to both RGH and PLC.
