Calgary, AB, Canada

Job Description

Your Opportunity:

AHS is recruiting a Nurse Practitioner (NP) - to join the dynamic Intensive Care Unit multidisciplinary team based out of the Rockyview General Hospital (RGH). This position will provide support to the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) once established. This position will provide frontline delivery of critical care which includes care of patients within the ICU, consults and outreach/code 66 calls anywhere within the site(s). The NP will manage patients admitted to the ICU in collaboration with the ICU team to ensure seamless transfers into and out of the ICU for this complex, high needs, patient group. You will provide comprehensive, holistic, patient and family centered care through advanced clinical practice, leadership, consultations, referrals, education and research. In addition, you will provide nursing education and leadership locally and zonally and will be involved in ongoing quality improvement initiatives and program development related to ICU patients. The NP requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative and trusting relationships with staff, management, physicians, and all members of the interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will demonstrate established skill in the areas of organization, critical thinking, conflict resolution, advanced problem solving, interdisciplinary leadership, and change management. A passion for caring for patients with medical complexity, and their families, is essential.

Description:

The ICU Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse who is prepared at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. The ICU NP demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in medical and surgical critical care as well as advanced assessment, diagnostics, and interventions for critically ill patients as part of the ICU team. The ICU NP role integrates aspects of nursing and medicine to coordinate the care of ICU patients. Collaboration between these two disciplines is a key component of the ICU NP role and utilizing the interdisciplinary team is vital to providing comprehensive care to patients. Providing access to care is a key function of the ICU NP role. Direct care is provided through application of knowledge in advanced assessment skills, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and applicable interventions. These capabilities support the development of differential diagnoses and need for further interventions. The role of the ICU NP will help provide continuity of care to more complex patients, the interdisciplinary team, and to families. This role also includes time for participation in relevant research and education. Education for bedside Registered Nurses (RNs), rotating medical residents and medical students is a component of this NP role. This is a zonal position with a future dual assignment to both RGH and PLC. PLEASE NOTE: The Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners (AUNP) was certified by the Alberta Labour Relations Board on December 20, 2021, as the bargaining agent for all employees of Alberta Health Services (AHS) who are nurse practitioners performing advanced nursing care or nursing instruction.
