The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $84,500- $93,175 starting salary determined by the PEA

Performance range: starting salary to max of $109,919 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Nurse Lead assists with leadership and supervision for the team of Nurses under the oversight of the Associate Director, Clinical Health Program (AD CHP). This role contributes to the professional delivery of integrated, holistic health care for students by providing a full scope clinical nursing practice, including programs established for targeted populations, and providing health education and outreach to the campus community. In the post-secondary education context, the SWC RN role is, in addition to a clinical professional, fundamentally an educator and student affairs professional contributing to students\' academic and personal success. The RN team at the SWC works together collaboratively, while also practicing with autonomy and to the full extent of Registered Nursing scope of practice.

The Nurse Lead reports to the Associate Director, Clinical Health and contributes to collaborative and inter-professional care and support a positive learning environment for colleagues and student co-op, practicum and other student trainees. Clinical professionals providing care through the Student Wellness Centre are also student affairs practitioners who understand the context and challenges experienced by students in a higher-education environment and work to provide care that addresses their specific needs. UVic offers a fully integrated student wellness model and the care provided by the clinical nurse team is a critical facet of the integrated care system. Registered nurses also regularly provide care to Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and other equity-deserving students and understand the differing care and wellness requirements for these groups.

Job Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor\'s degree in Nursing, current registration as a practicing member in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, up-to-date CPR certification-level C and AED certificate, completion of the BCCDC Immunization Competency course and a certified practice in reproductive health, contraceptive management & STI management.

5 years clinical nursing experience including familiarity with electronic medical records and standard office equipment and software is required. Professional practice must include:

  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and skills in the delivery of health care;
  • Knowledge of contemporary student development theory, and current preventative health care practices;
  • Experience in an interdisciplinary team-based, higher-education health clinic or other setting working with a predominantly young adult population
  • Demonstrated leadership implementing initiatives and programs;
  • Demonstrated coordination and facilitation in health programming via a variety of delivery modalities; and,
  • Providing mentorship, consultation, and sharing knowledge with other staff;
  • Demonstrate cultural competency with a unique and diverse student community.
Experience and knowledge in a relevant core specialty may be required. Equivalent combinations of training, education and experience, may be considered where appropriate.

Requirements include knowledge of:
  • Cultural awareness of the Indigenous peoples of British Columbia and familiarity with the challenges that Indigenous students face in the public post-secondary education system.
  • An understanding of the issues that Indigenous students face when interfacing with western healthcare systems and the Indigenous ways of health and wellness.
  • Healthcare and wellness challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students.
  • Cultural awareness of the challenges experienced by other equity deserving students and an understanding of how to address those needs through an integrated wellness model.
Skills:
  • Knowledge of PHC acute episodic and chronic health delivery, disease and injury prevention, and health promotion and education;
  • Ability to be creative, resourceful, flexible, and able to take initiative, and display a professional, tactful and enthusiastic demeanor in representing the SWC;
  • Ability to engage in excellent interpersonal relations with students and team members;
  • Liaise well with Greater Victoria community partners e.g. VIHA, Public Health, CDC, others;
  • Ability to relate well with the young adult population to effectively assess and initiate care;
  • Ability to effectively make decisions, embrace change and engage in service improvements;
  • Effective skills in presentation and group facilitation
The following may be considered an asset and given preference:
  • Certification in community health nursing and/or related areas;
  • Experience in primary health or community health nursing;
  • Knowledge of the UVic campus community.
