Working for the School of Dentistry
The Mike Petryk School of Dentistry, Oral Health Clinic, is located on the 8th Floor of the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and provides oral health care services. The Mike Petryk School of Dentistry also operates in the ECHA (Edmonton Clinic Health Academy) and the KATZ building.
Position Summary
This position involves multiple areas of responsibility within the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry. The Nurse & HSE Advisor collaborates frequently with the Manager, Clinical Services, Associate Chair, Clinical Affairs, the Academic Department Manager, the Infection Prevention & Control Officer, the FoMD Health & Safety Advisor and other key stakeholders to create and administer all aspects of the departmental Health, Safety & Environment program. The Nurse & HSE Advisor utilizes occupational health & safety principles, nursing knowledge and skills, together with infection prevention & control expertise, to create, monitor and lead the implementation of a structured approach to the health & safety of all persons within the department. The Nurse & HSE Advisor remains current in their knowledge & expertise through continued learning, consultation with subject matter experts, and participation in relevant committees and working groups. The Nurse & HSE Advisor is able to create and deliver engaging and effective adult learning materials as required.
Duties
Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Regulatory Compliance:
Acquires and maintains current and relevant knowledge of regulatory college, provincial and national IPC standards within medicine, dentistry and affiliated healthcare disciplines.
Creates and revises the IPC policies, guidelines and standards
Creates and delivers lectures, in-services and teaching sessions In consultation with various subject matter experts, creates, revises, and assists with the delivery of the Clinical Preparation - IPC modules annually.
Health, Safety & Environment Compliance:
Acquires and maintains current and relevant working knowledge of provincial and national OH&S, HIA Legislation.
Creates, revises and implements departmental Health Safety & Environment structure for hazard assessments, hazard controls, safe operating procedures/safe work practices.
Acts as School of Dentistry Health, Safety & Environment Subcommittee Chair.
Health, Safety & Environment Coordinator:
Remains available during OHC operational hours as IPC & HSE Consultant for all students, faculty & staff.
Promotes compliance with all applicable IPC & HSE policies & Safe Work Practices (SWP) within the School of Dentistry through discussion, demonstration, mentoring and clinical observation. This includes but is not limited to: aseptic techniques, IPC best practices and implementation of Safe Work Practices in the clinical environment.
In cooperation with clinical supervisors, performs and documents area specific inspections, hazard assessments and hazard controls.
Nursing:
Facilitates clinical management of BBFE's by students, faculty and staff.
Acts as primary responder for clinical emergencies.
Monitors and assists in the recovery of sedation patients, as required.
Consults with NetCare for urgent and routine OHC patient medical information upon request by clinicians according to agreed upon schedule.
Work in collaboration with OMFS Discipline Lead, as required, to complete medical consults for OHC patients.
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
Required current working knowledge of Alberta's Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
Current working knowledge of the University of Alberta HSE Management System.
Infectious Diseases Regulation and various university health & safety initiatives.
Must have current and relevant knowledge of association, college, provincial and national IPC standards within medicine, dentistry and affiliated dental disciplines.
Current CPR-BLS certification.
Current ACLS certification.
Current working knowledge of provincial, AHS, University & CDSA Blood/Body Fluid Exposure procedures and protocols.
Current working knowledge of HIA, PIPA & FOIP.
Preferred Qualifications
Formal education, certification or equivalent experience in the following is considered an asset:
Healthcare Occupational Health & Safety; Canadian Nurses Association COHN (Canada) credential or Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, CRSP designation is desired but not required.
Healthcare Infection Prevention and Control; IPAC Canada, CBIC Certification in Infection Control designation is desired.
RN Prescribing and ability to add restricted activity for Mike Petryk clinical practice setting to RN Permit.
Dental procedures, instrumentation and equipment.
Surgical Aseptic techniques and perioperative Nursing.
Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) techniques.
Assisting with mild to moderate sedation using nitrous oxide & oxygen, oral benzodiazepines or intravenous sedation.
