Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Nurse Clinician of the Local Program, Sexual Assault Service (SAS), works with the program team to develop and implement local services that support women who are survivors of sexual assault. This position collaborates with the SAS team for all other program initiatives. The Nurse Clinician is responsible for the nursing components of the local SAS. Duties include organizing and implementing sexual assault training for nurses; developing and implementing policies, procedures and protocols for the SAS nurses; participating in hiring, training, and coordinating SAS nurses for the local SAS; and acting as a liaison between C&W and Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) for the local SAS.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Develops goals and objectives for the SAS nurses of the local sexual assault service by identifying nursing specific needs; establishing desired outcomes; and initiating the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies to achieve the local program goals and objectives.



2. Provides input into the hiring process for SAS nurses. Trains, supports and schedules SAS nurses. Maintains relevant databases and participates in the performance review process for the sexual assault nurses. Sets up administrative meetings and continuing nursing education.



3. Debriefs with SAS nurses post-shift, and provides direction as required.



4. Has primary responsibility for liaison between BCW and VGH departments such as emergency, area supplies, pharmacy, and the RCMP Forensic and Riverview toxicology labs with respect to nursing issues.



5. Ensures that the necessary equipment and supplies are available and in good repair for the SAS team working at VGH.



6. Ensures the records system, including hand written and computerized documents such as patient-related documentation is up to date and operationalized.



7. Coordinates and recommends revisions to the nursing policies at VGH related to the management of SA survivors presenting at Emergency. Participates in orientation of new VGH emergency nurses.



8. Ensures quality assurance standards are implemented and maintained by the SAS nurses. Provides follow-up with staff and/or appropriate department. Participates in preparation of the annual SWH Quality of Care Committee presentations.



9. Models clinical competence by performing duties such as providing clinical nursing support/care to patients as a SA nurse as required.



10. Provides input to the Program Director with respect to budget development regarding SAS delivery at VGH, the SAS nurses, and capital acquisitions for the SAS program.



11. In collaboration with the SAS team, develops and/or provides education to health care professionals, community-based providers, and the public on and off site through methods such as formal and informal presentations, developing educational materials, collating information packages, and verbally responding to inquiries as required.



12. Facilitates and promotes a research culture through methods such as promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, reviewing relevant literature/resources, identifying SA nursing issues/practices which require research and promoting the use of research findings in clinical practice. In collaboration with others, participates in research (excluding SANE-specific practice issues).



13. Participates in program related committees, SWH Nurses' Group and site-wide committees, providing and/or receiving information and participating in decision making.



14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP). Three (3) years of recent relevant experience demonstrating competency in the specialty area or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current CPR Certification.
