Unit/Project Description:


This role supports Hot Cell Facility operations involving the safe handling, processing, and examination of radioactive materials, including medical isotopes. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining shielded hot cells, remote manipulators, specialized ventilation systems, and radiation monitoring equipment to support isotope production and nuclear materials handling.


Nuclear Operations and Facilities at McMaster comprises a world class suite of nuclear facilities, including the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, the Centre for Advanced Nuclear Systems shielded facilities, the McMaster University Cyclotron Facility, the McMaster Accelerator Laboratory, the McMaster High Level Laboratory facility and the Taylor Radiobiology Source. This suite of nuclear facilities is key to our identity as "Canada's Nuclear University" and a major effort is underway to increase the research and educational impact of these facilities in this priority strategic area of the University.





Job Summary:





Responsible for maintaining equipment utilized in the various reactor functions including isotope production, neutron activation and other ancillary nuclear activities





Purpose and Key Functions:





Perform tests to monitor and validate fabricated equipment to ensure compliance with established acceptance criteria and applicable safety standards. Fabricate customized equipment, handling tools and special filter assemblies. Draft sketches and drawings using CAD software. Provide advice on equipment and process problems within a particular area of expertise. Complete equipment maintenance logs and work order documents. Record and summarize instrument data. Fill out preparation and testing forms. Calculate ratios for mixing chemicals. Meet with equipment operators to gather and compile information required to understand and resolve equipment problems. Source and assess commercially available materials and equipment. Perform maintenance and repairs to equipment. Calibrate equipment according to established criteria. Clean and prepare materials. Use tools such as a drill press, lathe, and cut-off saw to produce replacement parts required when fabricating and repairing equipment. Operate and maintain equipment such as a high vacuum and residual gas analyzer. Maintain and repair electronic equipment and compressed air breathing systems. Keep test and assembly shops organized, clean, and stocked. Maintain the confidentiality of information. Update and maintain knowledge regarding materials and processes that may be appropriate for use within reactor facilities.

Provide orientation and show procedures to others.




Requirements:





3 year Community College diploma in Engineering Technology or related field.

o Requires 3 years of relevant experience.



Assets:

- Experience working in hot cells, gloveboxes, or radiological facilities


- Knowledge of CNSC regulatory compliance and radiation safety procedures


- Skilled in contamination control and remote handling practices


- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability


- Ability to work effectively in high-hazard, procedure-driven environments



Additional Information:

- Must be able to wear PPE, including respiratory protection when required


- High attention to detail with strong documentation and safety culture
