  • In 1978, both the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada officially recognized Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica as a National Historic Site. The Cathedral is indeed the oldest surviving church in Ottawa. It stands on the site that was occupied by the first Catholic chapel open to both anglophones and francophones of Bytown. The work on the building\xe2\x80\x99s structure was conducted between 1841 and 1865, and the interior ornamentation, from 1876 to 1885. Over its history, several important events, including state funerals have been celebrated. Today, it serves as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall\xe2\x80\x99s Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall, and is thus an important site in the life of the Catholic Church in Ottawa, as well as the Cathedral in the Nation\xe2\x80\x99s Capital. Currently the Cathedral is #6 on Trip Advisor\xe2\x80\x99s \xe2\x80\x98Must See\xe2\x80\x99 attractions in the Nation\xe2\x80\x99s Capital. The Cathedral wishes to employ a Tour Guide for the summer tourist season who will offer guided tours in both French and English.

    What you will gain

    • Develop your public speaking skills in both official languages
    • Learn to work as part of a team with both staff, volunteers, and clergy of the Cathedral

    What you will do
    Your main workplace will be in the main Cathedral. Thus, you will
    • Work in one of the most beautiful buildings in the Nation\xe2\x80\x99s Capital and help ensure the sacredness of the site
    • With the support of a mentor, learn and execute an informative guided tour of the Cathedral to help visitors learn more about the Catholic faith, as well as the architecture and collections of the Cathedral
    • Provide a formal guided tour according to demand in either French or English. Schedule is subject to change depending on the various activities at the Cathedral
    • Greet and answer questions from the thousands of visitors and pilgrims who visit Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica each summer
    • Accept and document payments for fees for guided tours as instructed by the Rector or his delegate.

    Duration: Full-time job during the summer season (May 8 to September 1, 2023). Possibility of part-time work subsequently.

    What we are looking for
    To be eligible for the Tour Guide position, you must:
    • Be 18 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

    The candidate we are seeking must have:
    • Excellent oral communication skills in both official languages (English and French).*
    • Strong presentation skills suitable for various audiences (adults, children, etc.); and
    • Personal qualities that are visitor, service, and teamwork-oriented
    • Knowledge of architectural features, religious art, and the Roman Catholic Church are considered an asset

    • Candidates must be able to offer guided tours and answer complex questions in both official languages. If you meet this criterion, please indicate \xe2\x80\x9cBilingual - English and French\xe2\x80\x9d in your application.

    Conditions of Employment
    Conditions of employment are any requirements that must be met or complied with before being hired for a particular position and are to be maintained throughout the employment period.

    Candidates must be prepared to:
    • Work indoors and outdoors. Note that the Cathedral does not have air conditioning.
    • Obtain and maintain an Enhanced Police Information Check (EPIC)
    • Sign and Respect the Pastoral Code of Conduct for all employees of the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall
    • Work a variable schedule that may include some weekends, statutory holidays, and evenings
