Job Summary
The Research Technician will be working in The Conservation Decisions Lab located within the Forest and Conservation Sciences Department, Faculty of Forestry, UBC. The Tech will be undertaking a range of tasks including remote field work, data collection, data entry, data quality control and archiving. The tech will undertake preliminary data analyses, including descriptive statistics. The technician will participate in the production of scientific communications (journal papers, popular press articles). The tech must have an understanding of Salish Sea ecology and threat management in British Columbia and field work experience in remote locations. The candidate must be willing to work up to 70% of time on Salt Spring Island with the remainder at the UBC Vancouver campus.

Organizational Status
The Research Technician reports to Professor Tara Martin and is not responsible for any supervision.

Work Performed
Under direct supervision of the supervisor, provides technical support for the following:-
Research Duties:

  • Assist the PI to undertake fieldwork in the Fraser River Estuary and Salish Sea
  • Data entry, data quality control
  • Assist the PI to undertake descriptive analyses and data summaries.
  • Assist with literature reviews, paper and report writing and publication process.
  • Assist the PI to liaise with local Indigenous organizations and conservancies
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is assessed on an ongoing basis by supervisor. Opportunities for training will be sought to enhance skills in all areas. Consequences of data mismanagement would be delays in producing scientific papers and reports that are expected by funding bodies and stakeholders.

Supervision Received
Employee will be supervised by Professor Tara Martin.

Supervision Given
The Research Technician will not have a supervisory role but will work closely with graduate students in the Martin Conservation Decisions Lab.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergrad degree in forest and conservation sciences/biological science, preferred with some courses in ecology and conservation.

Experience undertaking fieldwork in remote locations

Experience undertaking descriptive statistics

Experience working with Indigenous knowledge holders

Experience working with local conservation organizations

Experience in Salish Sea ecology
