Job Description


The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), which is located on the unceded land of the Mi\'kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk, welcomes applications for a cross-appointed 9-month term position (Assistant Professor) in Biology and Environmental Studies to teach courses during the 2023-24 Academic Year. The course load depends on the applicant\'s contribution to labs but will include Environmental Biology (BIO 1010), an advanced ecology course, and at least 2 Environmental Studies courses.

UPEI is a small, dynamic university with a strong commitment to teaching and research excellence. The Biology Department ( ) consists of eleven professors, six technical staff, and is the largest department in the Faculty of Science with approximately 650 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students. Our graduate students and faculty research interests are in the broad areas of cancer and stem cell biology, watershed and coastal habitat ecology, animal habitat fragmentation, heart and stroke physiology, aquatic toxicology, developmental plant biology, as well as population genetics and evolution, among others.

As an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary undergraduate program in the Faculty of Science, the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) ( ) provides students with the opportunity to explore the environment through theory, research and practice. A focus on experiential learning, individualized attention from faculty and close connections with government, community organizations, and the private sector allows students to get involved in real-world issues. The Environmental Studies program has 3 faculty members and approximately 100 majors who can choose one of three specializations in their BES degree (Environmental Innovation and Change Management, Island Environments and Sustainability, and Environmental Thought and Practice). Faculty research interests are in the areas of environmental governance, conservation, climate change, environmental planning, environmental justice, sustainability transitions, renewable energy, and energy sovereignty in Indigenous communities.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold Ph.D. in a field related to ecology and the environmental sciences or geography and should be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Documented experience teaching any of these courses would be a definite asset. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with experience teaching university level courses.

Salary: Commensurate with experience as per the Collective Agreement of the UPEI Faculty Association, Bargaining Unit #1 ( ). This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

Start Date: August 1, 2023 (negotiable)
