Newcomer Connections is a crucial pillar within the YMCA family. Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement Centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world and from all walks of life.
The Opportunity
As a Newcomer Youth Advisor, you'll help newcomer youth ages 12-17 feel empowered, connected, and supported as they settle into life in Canada. Your role will focus on planning and delivering youth leadership programs, Canadian sport and outdoor recreation experiences, and community engagement activities. You'll also support youth in accessing volunteer opportunities, employment resources, and summer camps.
This full-time position is based at the Saint John Regional Y and requires flexibility. Your regular work hours will vary Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. or 12:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., with occasional Saturday shifts (about once per month) to support youth programs and events..
Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver Newcomer Youth Programming for youth ages 12-17, with a focus on leadership, recreation, and social connection.
• Provide strong mentorship and model positive behaviour for newcomer youth.
• Build meaningful relationships with youth and their families, fostering trust and confidence.
• Collaborate with YMCA teams and community organizations to connect youth with opportunities such as camps, volunteer roles, and extracurriculars.
• Support efforts to expand and strengthen youth programming across Newcomer Connections.
• Recruit and train volunteers to serve as program mentors and role models.
• Work closely with the Intercultural Competency Trainer to ensure programming is inclusive and culturally aware.
• Maintain accurate data and reporting using YMCA systems such as iCARE and CRM.
• Attend regular staff meetings, complete monthly expenses, and contribute to team-wide initiatives and events.
• Promote and support initiatives like the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign and P.R.O. Kids to remove barriers for youth participation.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the G.M. of Newcomer & Community Connections.

Skills and Qualifications.

• A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
• A minimum of 3 years work experience in a cross-cultural environment
• Approachable and possessing a solid client-centric attitude
• Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community
• Exceptional communication skills, particularly with individuals for whom English is not a first language.
• Demonstrated interest or experience working with youth
• Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work flexible hours, including 2-3 evenings/week
• Fluency in English is required; additional languages are considered an asset.
• Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
