New Grad: High Speed Analog Test Engineer

Ottawa, ON, Canada

Job Description

Since 1992, Ciena has been driven by a relentless pursuit of network innovation. We believe in a network that grows smarter, more agile, and more responsive every day. This means that when you digitally interact in your world - picking up the phone, streaming video, texting a friend or loved one - your interactions are being enabled by Ciena technologies. Ciena makes your social / entertainment / business existence REAL.

No candidate will meet every single desired qualification. If your experience looks a little different from what we've identified below and you think you can bring value to the role, we'd love to learn more about you!

What will you do at Ciena as a High-Speed Analog Test Engineer?

The Wavelogic family of products are widely used in Ciena's optical fiber transmission solutions and are one of the main contributors to Ciena's success in the telecommunications industry. Successful candidates will be joining a vibrant R&D team with a proven track-record of success over 30-years of evolution and revolution in the advancement of high-speed circuits used in broadband fiber-optic modems. This team pioneered the introduction of the world's first high-speed DAC and ADC analog macros that ushered in the era of coherent fiber-optic product solutions.

To further strengthen our team, we are looking for a hardworking high-speed analog test engineer who will participate in the development of methodologies and techniques to enable production test of custom circuits in the latest deep-submicron CMOS and/or BiCMOS technologies. You will be under the oversight of a senior analog architect within a larger team who are responsible to deliver a full mixed signal IP block solution integrated into the Wavelogic family of products.

Types of custom analog circuits delivered by the team include electrical interface DAC and ADC based SERDES solutions for 112G and 224G and optical-line high-speed DAC and ADC circuits connecting to optical modulators and detectors. The team also develops broadband circuits such as transimpedance amplifiers, modulator drivers, and critical precision analog circuits for control and monitoring functions, etc..

In this role:

  • You will be responsible to assess new and emerging high-speed test equipment, fixtures and probe-technology for high-speed analog circuits operating up to 100GHz bandwidth.
  • Developing testing techniques to screen parts for both functional and parametric defectivity working closely with the circuit designers and 3rd party test implementation facilities
  • Reporting on status updates on a regular basis, participation in team meetings and sharing of experience with the rest of the group.
  • Participate in high-speed modelling and characterization of the test hardware itself, which needs to operate at very high speeds.
  • Participate in the design of custom analog circuits which can be implemented on the target ASIC itself as a 'built in test function' or reside external to the ASIC as a stand-alone circuit forming part of the test hardware to perform a custom high-speed test function.
What technical experience and personal skills are required for this role?
  • Electrical or computer engineering, computer science or other applicable scientific degree at the BEng/BSc. level.
  • Academic or work-term experience with ASIC design
  • A highly motivated self-starter, able to work collaboratively with other team members
  • Ability to methodically address technical problems
  • Excellent organization, written and oral (English) interpersonal skills
  • Experience with circuit test equipment such as high-speed oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers and spectrum analyzers.
  • Experience with analog design tools from Cadence, Mentor and Synopsis
What additional assets can help me in this role?
  • Experience with 2.5D or 3D E-M tools such as HFSS or EMX for modelling of high-speed fixtures
  • Experience with mixed-signal design validation using state-of the art probing and test equipment
The above lists are intended to describe the general nature and level of work, and they are not intended to be a comprehensive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required to be qualified and to be performed by the selected candidate. You will have an opportunity to better understand the role through the interview experience.
