Description




The Department of Medicine (DoM) and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for a full-time neurologist who will take on the role of Residency Program Director (PD). The successful candidate would join the Division of Neurology in the capacity of their subspecialty.



The Division of Neurology has approximately 40 Neurologists and is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its subspecialty programs including Neuromuscular, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Movement Disorders, Epilepsy, Headache and Stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology. In addition to modern out-patient clinical units, the Division has a 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 24 bed stroke inpatient unit and consult services at both the Civic and General campuses of The Ottawa Hospital. The call schedule is divided into 2 services - acute stroke and general neurology. Only stroke neurologists are expected to provide acute stroke call service.



The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.



Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).



The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.



The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada's top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean's), 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades. Responsibilities




In the capacity as PD, reporting to the DoM Head/Chair and the Vice Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine (FOM), the incumbent is responsible for the residents' educational experience and ensuring the program meets the accreditation standards mandated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). The PD manages the program with a view towards increasing equity, diversity and inclusivity and upholding social accountability initiatives. Program Directors within DOM are provided with administrative resources to support program operations as well as a stipend.



The Ottawa Neurology Residency Program received full accreditation after regular review in May 2024. There are 22 residents currently in the program with five PGY1 entry positions per year. The program is structured to tailor training experiences specific to each resident's career goals. The program offers a clinical stream, a research stream, and a robust community neurology experience.



The successful candidate will join a group of nationally and internationally recognized neurologists. Under the direction of the Head of the Division of Neurology, DoM at The Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa, the successful candidate will work in both outpatient and inpatient environments in accordance with their area of specialization in a fee-for-service model. The physician will participate in the Neurology on-call rotation, clinical teaching inpatient service and neurology consultation service. The incumbent will be expected to participate in a variety of clinical duties as well as education and academic opportunities and initiatives at the University of Ottawa.

Qualifications




The ideal candidate will be a certified neurologist who demonstrates strong administrative skills, leadership ability, and communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate is an experienced role model dedicated to continuous learning. The PD exhibits knowledge of, and adherence to, policies and procedures including accreditation standards and adherence to maintaining currency on accreditation changes. The successful candidate will have taken or be willing to undertake training in negotiation and problem resolution, crucial conversations, and the RCPSC course for new program directors.



The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.



The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Job Benefits




The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.



The program director's current stipend is $80,000 per annum. The PD and the residency program are supported by the Division of Neurology and Department of Medicine according to PGME guidelines.
