Primary Purpose: The Network Programmer/Analyst is responsible for the operation, maintenance, deployment, and development of network services in a large enterprise network supporting 30,000+ client devices. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a team of IT professionals to develop and maintain a wide range of services provided to the larger university community and must possess a keen aptitude for developing new skills in a highly customer focused, demanding, and business driven environment.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager of Communication and Network Services, ICT Security, Risk and Compliance, this position will collaborate closely with clients and peers to develop and deploy network infrastructure and services that are widely utilized across the campus community. Some evening and weekend shifts are required.

Accountabilities:

  • Collaborate closely with peers within the Networks team and clients using our services. Work collaboratively with closely connected teams that deliver secure enterprise technology solutions.
  • Program and troubleshoot network elements (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless).
  • Support ancillary network systems (DNS/DHCP services, authentication systems, network management tools).
  • Assist or lead service management activities throughout the service lifecycle, from service conception to sunset. Consult with stakeholders to ensure service relevance to business requirements, manage change within defined processes, and ensure peers are equipped with the tools needed to manage individual services within a larger portfolio.
  • Work independently on assigned work while exercising initiative to complete tasks in support of the overall mission of the team and the University.
  • Evaluate diverse technology and services for business value, functionality, robustness, and performance.
  • Remediate issues in a large, multi-segment, campus network connected to multiple Internet and Research networks and remote sites.
  • Enthusiastically engage in continuous technical and personal development.
Qualifications

Education: A diploma, certificate or University degree in a related discipline; i.e. Computer Science, engineering. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Network/security industry certifications will be considered an asset.

Experience: A minimum of three years of work experience as a network programmer/administrator in a large enterprise networked environment.

Skills:
  • Excellent at communicating verbally, and capable of producing high-quality documentation.
  • Ability to analyze, program, and troubleshoot within a large-scale switched and routed, multi-segmented IP network, primarily with Cisco equipment. Strong understanding of network routing and switching concepts and protocols (OSPF and BGP), and segmentation technologies in a highly redundant large-scale LAN.
  • Solid understanding of Data Center networking technologies.
  • Strong understanding of Wi-Fi networking, including ability to troubleshoot failures and assist with the planning and implementation of new networks. (Knowledge of Cisco wireless solutions an asset)
  • Strong understanding of IP telephony concepts, and proficiency in troubleshooting issues with both infrastructure and client devices.
  • Ability to implement network support systems within virtualized computing environments.
  • Solid understanding of physical networking standards and construction techniques as they pertain to fiber optics, copper, and wireless networking.
  • Experience with network management systems to aid in monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to support network-based security devices such as firewalls, VPNs, and authentication services (RADIUS, TACACS, Kerberos). Ability to evaluate and implement complex rule sets, and identify, evaluate, and mitigate security risk. Supported platforms are primarily from Fortinet and Cisco.
  • A strong understanding of automation concepts and tools.
  • Proficiency in one or more scripting/programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Go) to assist in analysis, reporting, and small task automation.
