Reporting to the Director, Network Services, the Network Analyst/Specialist's primary responsibility is to implement and maintain the provincial research and education network. This role is responsible for assisting in the design and implementation of solutions for complex data network systems, including, evaluating facilities, assessing requirements, and managing system interdependencies. The Network Analyst/Specialist also provides ongoing operational support for the BCNET provincial network and works closely with members to ensure reliable, high-quality data connectivity. All duties are carried out in alignment with BCNET's strategic goals and mission.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Working with the BCNET Director, Network Services and as a member of the network team, provide operational support to ensure the stability and service levels of the BCNET Network
Monitors network activity and connectivity, troubleshoots, diagnoses and resolves network problems
Assesses network problems and develops solutions and implementation plans for resolutions with vendor equipment or software suppliers and maintains a peer technical expertise liaison with vendors and suppliers
Advises and makes recommendations on technical life cycle planning of the BCNET network infrastructure and network services
Employs technical expertise and represents BCNET in developing, communicating, and presenting connectivity solutions with members
Utilize existing toolsets to perform network installations, troubleshooting and documentation tasks
Works independently to see operational projects to completion and works collaboratively with peers and team members to meet objectives
Participates in the development of best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across the infrastructure and platforms
Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current network technology and tools
Required to provide after hours on-call support on a rotational basis during which they are required to be available to work on emergency network problems, maintenance, or project activities.
Other duties assigned as required.

Qualifications and Skills:
Must Have
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related discipline
Professional, associate, or technical certification such as Cisco CCNP Enterprise or Service Provider, Juniper Internet Associate or Specialist (JNCIA, JNCIS), or other demonstrated equivalent in routing, switching, or network security
Minimum 3+ years for Analyst, (5+ years for Specialist) of relevant experience supporting complex enterprise IP LAN/WAN networks, large campus enterprise or service provider networks, network operations and network management
Experience in effectively presenting technical solutions to customers
Broad knowledge and ability to effectively use and understand all aspects of local and wide area networks, network standards, protocols, network hardware, configuration, network security, and prevailing networking technologies
Experience working with and demonstrated depth of knowledge of the following technologies including, but not limited to:
Routing and switching (OSPF, BGP, MPLS, HSRP, VRFs, policy routing, ROADM, optical networking), network security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, SSL, VPN, IPSec), traffic engineering (QoS, IP SLA, policing, shaping), packet capture and analysis (Wireshark), network design (IPv6, multicast, virtual networks), and network management systems (SNMP, DNS, DHCP)
Excellent problem-solving abilities to effectively resolve multiple and complex technical problems
Excellent collaboration skills with clients and suppliers to develop effective and appropriate network solutions
Ability to communicate (written and oral) effectively with team members, collaborators, suppliers, and member institutions
Ability to work effectively under pressure while juggling multiple tasks and priorities to meet time sensitive deadlines
Ability to take initiative and work with limited direction.
Assets
Experience with Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
1 year of firewall implementation experience (Palo Alto and/or Fortigate preferred).
Experience working within the higher education sector is an asset
Experience working in a network service-provider environment
Experience with automation and scripting in Linux environment and working knowledge of tools such as Python, Ansible, and network APIs in general.
Note:
This posting covers two related roles Analyst and Specialist. The level of appointment will be determined based on the candidate's years of directly relevant experience and demonstrated competencies. Generally, candidates with approximately
3 or more years of experience
will be considered for the Analyst role, and those with
5 or more years of experience
for the Specialist role.
