Job Description


The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)- is part of a dynamic care team that includes Neonatologists, Physician Assistants, and Neonatal Fellows. This triad works seamlessly with an extended interdisciplinary team to diagnose and treat all disorders affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. In addition to direct clinical care, the NNP functions fully in the other domains of practice embedded in the role, including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. The NNP is eligible for Clinical Cross Appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University. The NNP is considered a highly respected leader and key member of the Interprofessional team at MCH. With over two decades of service, the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner team was recognized for their innovation and care with the Hospital\xe2\x80\x99s distinguished Cornerstone of Care Award.Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (McMaster Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital) has established an internal residency program for current Nurse Practitioners to attain their Neonatal Practitioner experience. The residency opportunity will provide a training program for Nurse Practitioners, inclusive of didactic and clinical components, which will develop their skillset in a Neonatal Intensive Care Setting over a period of 12 months. NPs who participate in this internal residency program will be expected to commit to continued full-time employment within the NICU for a period of 36 months from the completion of the internal residency program.

Qualifications

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class, pediatrics or primary care
2. Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training
3. Current NRP Certification
4. Current BCLS Certification
5. Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in a neonatal ICU preferred
6. Advanced knowledge of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology
7. Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act
8. Knowledge of family dynamics as it relates to role change with respect to the birth process crisis/stress situation and death and dying
9. Critical analysis and problem-solving skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnosis
10. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
11. Ability to collaborate with members of a diverse interprofessional healthcare team to provide and promote patient-centred care in a clinically complex environment
