Position Description:
Serco\xe2\x80\x99s Training and Experience Program (STEP) is designed to provide undergraduate university and college students paid accredited internship opportunities to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience in a professional environment. Our goal is to help you build a career roadmap that provides you with challenging and rewarding learning experiences with Serco.


Serco offers internship opportunities across the following three career tracks: Business, Technical, and Engineering. Our 2023 internship opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada, beginning on May 22nd and concluding on August 11th, with 1 week off July 3rd-7th. You will work with your manager to identify the best working schedule for you, working no more than an average of 36 hours a week with the added perk of half-days on Fridays.


In addition to gaining hands-on experience, you will attend training sessions taught by skilled leaders in our company to better prepare you for a full-time career. Furthermore, we believe great ideas come from all levels of the company! Each year we challenge our interns to work in diverse teams to develop, propose and execute on a project that improves our ways of working. Throughout this project you will work with Senior Sponsors and meet with members of our Executive Team.

Serco is seeking a Naval Architecture Intern on Serco Canada Marine\xe2\x80\x99s Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering teams to support our clients\xe2\x80\x99 ship design needs. You will apply basic Naval Architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas. You will have the ability to apply basic knowledge of Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering to perform routine analyses, prepare basic Naval Architectural/Marine systems design products and support the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering teams in the design and studies supporting a wide range vessels, watercraft and other floating structures.


Serco Canada Marine supports clients\xe2\x80\x99 ship design needs worldwide. These may include various government navies and coast guards, private commercial companies, and shipyards all over the globe.


You will receive technical guidance and training from experienced technical staff on the Naval Architecture/Marine engineering teams. You will report to Srinivas Viswanathan, Senior Engineering Manager.


If you are a Naval Architecture student, you will perform the following duties in this role:
  • Participate in providing concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization
  • Provide hull form analyses, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance calculations, etc.
  • Participate in providing weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses.
  • Perform design integration and establish principal characteristics and performance parameters.
  • Participate in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines on technical and engineering issues.
  • Assist with the preparation of documentation, reports, drawings and project plans.

If you are a Marine Engineering student, you will perform the following duties in this role:

  • Participate in working with the engineering team to formulate requirements and specifications and develop into concept, functional and detailed designs.
  • Participate in marine engineering analysis and design for new ship systems designs, by performing Class Rule calculations.
  • Support in the conceptual, functional and detail design of propulsion and auxiliary systems, equipment selection, component and pipe sizing
  • Participate in the development of Technical Procurement Specifications for various system components and mechanical equipment.
  • Participate in developing machinery arrangements. This will involve analyzing requirements for area, volume and maintenance envelopes while considering location and adjacency constraints.
  • Participate in developing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Inputs/ Outputs signal list, functionalities, and logic, using software such as PIPEFLOW.
  • Assist in preparing documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.

To be considered for this role, you will need:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering from an accredited university
  • Consideration will be granted to students who possess a background and/or working knowledge of the shipping industry, classification societies.
  • This position is contingent on your ability to pass a background check and drug screen.

Other desired skills include:
  • Possessing or the ability to obtain Canadian Security Clearances (Reliability/Controlled Goods or higher) may be considered an asset or may be required for the role.
  • Have an Authorization to work in Canada or ability to obtain the same.
  • An ability to create drawings and utilize CAD software such as AutoCad, Aveva, S3D, Cadmatic, etc.
