If so, we invite you to apply for the position of Natural Areas Coordinator within our City Operations department! As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in developing and implementing strategies to protect and improve the ecological health of Edmonton's natural areas.
The Natural Areas Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing plans to improve the management of the City's natural areas. This includes conducting field surveys, coordinating with stakeholders, and contributing to public education initiatives. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of ecological principles and experience in natural areas management.
What Will You Do?
• Develop and implement a management framework for natural areas, with a focus on wildlife
• Liaise with internal and external partners to ensure regulatory compliance and best practice awareness
• Conduct field surveys of wildlife locations, including wildlife and nest sweeps, monitoring and habitat evaluations
• Advise on regulations in relation to protected species and how to work safely in allowable proximity to protected wildlife
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to improve stewardship of natural areas
• Complete reports related to fieldwork and analyze data collected
• Review development plans, management plans, and City-wide strategies that affect Natural Areas
• Contribute to public education initiatives, including presentations and social media development
• Keep up to date with new environmental policies and legislation
• Contribute ideas that will impact policies based on ecological findings
• Secure grant funding for natural areas management
• Coordinate consultant wildlife surveys and signage for wildlife
Qualifications :• University degree in biological science, ecology or related field OR
• Completion of a two (2) year technology diploma in Ecology, Biological Sciences or related field from a recognized institute of technology
• A minimum of four (4) years experience with a degree or six (6) years experience with a diploma in ecology, wildlife biology, or natural areas management, and working with internal and external stakeholders
Assets:
• Valid First Aid Certification
• Professional Biologist or Biologist in Training accreditation
• Experience in plant and wildlife identification
• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS, Field Maps, and Survey123
• Experience in grant writing and securing funding for environmental projects
Skills required for success:
• Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of ecological principles, wildlife management, and natural areas stewardship
• Communication and Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting ecological data, and preparing comprehensive reports
• Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Ability to identify and analyze ecological challenges, and develop and implement effective solutions
• Planning and Coordination: Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
• Fieldwork and Outdoor Skills: Ability to conduct field surveys and work independently in various outdoor environments
• Experience conducting wildlife and nest sweeps and surveys, and habitat evaluations

Conditions of Employment:
• Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions
• May require dealing with difficult people and balancing the opinions of multiple stakeholders
• May require dealing with deadlines and pressures, particularly during wildlife nesting season
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
• Applicants may be tested.
Work Environment:
• The position involves a combination of office work and fieldwork
• Fieldwork may require exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, and wildlife
• This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.

Salary Range: $41.172 - $51.438 (Hourly); $72,534.770 - $90,620.900 (Annually)
