POSITION SUMMARY



The National Food Safety Manager provides strategic leadership in food safety culture, risk management, and continuous improvement, and acts as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and certification bodies.

This role ensures that all facilities maintain Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification and that all products meet or exceed federal, provincial, and international food safety and quality standards -- including CFIA, Health Canada, and Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).The position is accountable for advancing a proactive food safety culture, maintaining preventive controls for RTE foods, and ensuring full compliance with SQF code and Health Canada expectations for ready-to-eat manufacturing environments.

Implements an "On the Floor Management" mindset to ensure individual and team compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards for people safety, food safety, product quality, cost control, waste reduction, on-time delivery and service to team cohorts

Understands, promotes, follows and ensures team compliance for all company and regulatory standards including, but not limited to, Provincial Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS), Food Safety (GMP/SQF), Safe Operating Procedures (SOP's), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Attends/holds meetings with other departments to review and resolve any Quality Assurance matters related production, health/safety, product quality, QA holds, equipment, complaints, etc

JOB DUTIES



Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Food Safety Management System in compliance with SFCR, FDR, and applicable CFIA and Health Canada requirements.

Coordinate companywide internal audit programs and management reviews.

Ensure facilities maintain certification to SQF standards.

Lead risk assessments, hazard analyses, and preventive control plans for all product categories and facilities.

Establish and monitor verification programs (environmental monitoring, microbiological testing, supplier audits).

Manage food safety documentation and ensure accurate recordkeeping and traceability.

Serve as the company's regulatory subject matter expert on Canadian food laws, including:

o Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR)

o Food and Drugs Regulations (FDR)

o Front-of-Package Nutrition Labelling (FOP) requirements

o Allergen labelling, nutritional claims, and import/export requirements

Ensure product labels, formulations, and claims are compliant with CFIA and Health Canada standards.

Liaise with CFIA inspectors and other regulatory bodies during audits, inspections, and investigations.

Monitor regulatory updates and proactively communicate implications to leadership and operations teams.

Lead food safety investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).

Manage product recall and withdrawal procedures, ensuring regulatory reporting and timely communication.

Maintain a risk register and conduct periodic risk reviews for all business units.

Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to plant QA Managers, Supervisors, and HACCP Coordinators nationwide.

Champion a strong food safety culture and ensure ongoing staff training on hygiene, sanitation, allergens, and regulatory compliance.

Drive continuous improvement in food safety systems through trend analysis, KPI tracking, and process optimization.

Partner with R&D, Operations, and Supply Chain to ensure food safety integration in product development and sourcing.

Benchmark company practices against industry best practices and regulatory expectations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS



Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline

Advanced degree or specialized certification (e.g., MSc, PCQI, Certified HACCP Professional) is an asset.

7+ years progressive experience in food safety, quality assurance, or regulatory compliance within the food industry.

3+ years in a management or multi-site leadership role.

Proven experience interacting with CFIA, Health Canada, or other regulatory agencies.

Strong understanding of GFSI-benchmarked standards

Comprehensive knowledge of SFCR, FDR, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) (for export), and FOP labelling.

Strong HACCP and Preventive Controls expertise.

Skilled in root cause analysis, risk assessment, and audit management.

Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Strategic thinker with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

Demonstrated ability to foster a proactive food safety culture.

WORKING CONDITIONS



Full-time, permanent position requiring flexible hours as required based on business needs

Work is performed 70% in office environment and 30% on production floor and lab

Exposure to noise and a wet temperature varied environment when in the production area

Interaction with employees, management, and the public at large

After hours availability on emergency calls

Wearing of company provided Uniform and other Personal Protective Equipment is required as applicable
