The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Inpatient Surgical Care and Child Life Services, the Music Therapist, through the skillful use of music and music elements, promotes, maintains, and restores mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual health. Music has non-verbal, creative, structural and emotional qualities. The Music Therapist uses these in a therapeutic relationship to facilitate engagement, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication and personal development. Music therapy programs are based upon individual assessment, treatment planning and ongoing program evaluation. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Music Therapist implements programs with groups or individuals that display a vast continuum of needs.

Your Qualifications

  • Accredited/Certified with the Canadian Association for Music Therapy, required
  • Music Therapy Degree, diploma or certificate from an education program recognized by the Canadian Association of Music Therapy (CAMT), including 1000 hours of internship under the supervision of an Accredited Music Therapist (MTA), required
  • Registered member of the Canadian Association for Music Therapy, required
  • Demonstrated ability to provide music therapy for infants, children, youth and families in a health care setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated proficiency in piano, guitar and voice
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of music therapy theory and practice as well as therapeutic processes and boundaries with children, youth and families
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and build therapeutic relationships with children/youth and families
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child and youth development
  • Demonstrated initiative to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated effective decision making abilities
  • Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate and coach
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of other health care professionals and their role in care
  • Demonstrated skill with: building repertoire, song writing, music improvisation, music technology and the use of adaptive technology
  • Competency in other languages an asset
