Detailed Overview: The Music Therapist is responsible for conducting assessments, planning, implementing, conducting and evaluating individual and group music therapy programs and services in a residential setting. Acts as a resource to interdisciplinary staff, residents, families, students, and volunteers regarding music therapy and individual/group music therapy plans. Maintains resident records and music therapy equipment and supply inventory. Responsibilities:
Performs initial assessment of referred residents by methods such as completing assessment forms, reviewing records, consulting with resident, family, and team members, and gathering relevant information. Plans individual and/or group music therapy programs and services by establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, participating in relevant team/family conferences, discussing implementation options and determining resources available. Implements and conducts music therapy consistent with individual and/or group plans utilizing diverse intervention approaches including improvisation, guided imagery, grief and loss support.

Monitors the quality and outcome of music therapy programs by determining the purpose, method, and criteria of the evaluation, analyzing and interpreting results, and modifying and/or ceasing services as needed. Identifies music therapy needs and contributes to the development of operational plans, goals, objectives, and procedures as required by providing input and recommendations to the Manager, Clinical Operations.

Acts as a resource person to interdisciplinary staff, residents, and families regarding music therapy and individual resident/group music therapy plans; conducts sessions related to music therapy, provides information and answers questions.

Maintains resident records, statistical data, and reports in accordance with department, organizational and professional standards by methods such as maintaining resident documentation and completing resident attendance and workload measurement statistics. Maintains inventory of music therapy equipment and supplies; makes recommendations regarding purchase, provides general maintenance and repair of equipment and supplies, and complete documentation to have items purchased or repaired. Participates in approved committees and task groups and contributes during relevant interdisciplinary team and family conferences; shares information related to individual/group music therapy programs, and provides related updates.

Works with music therapy students, and volunteers by providing orientation, instructing, and monitoring services provided. Conducts performance appraisals of students/volunteers with the Manager, as necessary. Helps facilitate the placement of music therapy students. Assists the Manager with the selection of casual music therapists as required by developing clinical questions related to music therapy, participating in interviews with the Manager, and providing recommendations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience



Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from an accredited educational institution. Two years' recent, related experience in Music Therapy in a complex care residential, palliative or dementia setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.



Eligible for accreditation, with the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT).

Skills and Abilities



Current knowledge of developments in music therapy through literature review, educational programs and involvement in professional groups. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to assess residents, plan, implement and conduct effective individual and group music therapy programs and services. Ability to play a minimum of two musical instruments, piano and/or guitar and voice. Familiar with the use of a variety of musical instruments and related equipment. Ability to articulate philosophy, style, approach and benefits of music therapy in extended care settings. Ability to apply music therapy methods, systems and techniques to residents. Ability to function effectively as an interdisciplinary team member. Ability to accept responsibility and exercise initiative and independent judgement. Ability to work effectively with students and volunteers and share music therapy plans and objectives. * Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
