Dalnavert Museum is seeking a Museum Programs and Outreach Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate seeking to develop experience in the museum sector with a particular focus on program development and delivery, interpretation, outreach, communications, and wider museum operations.
The successful candidate will work closely with our Executive Director and management team to develop and implement innovative and inclusive programs, deliver exceptional visitor experiences via tours and other activities, engage existing and new audiences, implement communications strategies, and contribute to Dalnavert's mission to promote and protect this National Historic site in critically engaging and challenging ways. Professional development opportunities, including training and mentorship delivered by members of Dalnavert's Board, will be provided in an effort to assist the successful candidate plan their career goals.
The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Museum Programs and Communications Intern are as follows:
Develop an innovative and inclusive school program that expands Dalnavert Museum's current offering.
Work with the museum team to develop and deliver innovative and inclusive signature programs that connect with existing audiences and develop new audiences.
Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including providing tours and other recurring programs, processing admissions and other sales, and responding to visitor enquiries as needed.
Coordination and creation of newsletters, website and social media content, and the creation of promotional marketing materials as required; contribute to communication planning meetings as required.
Contribute to daily museum operations including, assisting with volunteer support, setting event spaces, ensuring health and safety procedures are being followed, and other standard museum operation duties as required.
Liaise with the collections team to develop engaging content related to artefacts and/or collections practices to be used to promote the museum and its activities.
Assist with fundraising, donor development and membership services as necessary.
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and skills:
Upper-level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Museum Studies, Education, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts), Communication Arts, Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, , or demonstrable skills and experience in a relevant professional sphere.
A high level of experience in developing and delivering museum programming including public and school programs such as tours, workshops and education programs and/or the ability to demonstrate relevant skills/experiences in a related area (project management and delivery etc.)
A high level of experience in building audiences through outreach, including but not limited to experience with partnerships, membership management, and digital media outreach
Experience in the use of common design tools, multimedia, and related equipment/software desired (e.g. Website development, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite, Digital Audio Recording/Editing).
Experience with popular social media platforms in a professional sphere (including relevant volunteer experience) a requirement and can be demonstrated with sample work; experience with social media as a brand tool an asset.
Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives, e.g. social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling.
Computer proficiency, including standard tools such as MS Office.
Experience in digital photography is an asset.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential, French and/or additional language skills an asset.
Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail, friendly, open to learning, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
Note: Availability to work weekends and occasional evenings is a requirement.
Funder Criteria
This position is dependent upon funding approval from the Young Canada Works (YCW) program. Applicants will only be considered if they meet the following criteria, as set by YCW:
a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
