KEY FUNCTION :
Perform tasks for patients to support activities of daily living. Clean equipment utilized in patient care areas while following Infection Control practices/procedures. Stock and reorder patient care supplies.
REPORTING :
Under the general direction of the Manager, Systemic Treatment.
DUTIES :
• Assist nurses, hospital staff and physicians with patient care related duties as directed.
• Assist patients in their basic care, ambulation, personal hygiene and all activities of daily living.
• Report any changes in patient condition immediately to the nurse.
• Assist with collection of patient data (i.e. height, weight, vitals and measurement of intake and output).
• Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of patients at all times.
• Assist with patient flow and transportation of patients to other departments/units as required.
• Disinfect equipment and surfaces as per Infection control practices/procedures.
• Utilize products for disinfecting in accordance with Canadian Standards Association and the manufacturer's instructions ensuring disinfection parameters are met.
• Identify items/supplies whose shelf life has expired and pull from use. Rotate all items/supplies in accordance with use by dates to reduce spoilage and waste in medical carts and cupboards.
• Monitor temperature readings for the medication and food refrigerators located on level 0 at the North East Cancer Centre.
• Perform cleaning of the chemotherapy room including chairs, stretchers, equipment, door handles, refrigerators and other clinic areas as required.
• Interact with patients, families and visitors providing information and support.
• Transfer, deliver and/or collect linen, rubbish, infectious waste, patient files, x-rays, specimens and equipment as required.
• Replace hazardous drug bins when required.
• Complete monthly inspection reports in conjunction with other staff; perform weekly inspection of eye wash stations.
• Operate mechanical lifts and utilize assistive devices as directed.
• Participate in inventory control procedures and order verification as required.
• Order and restock direct purchases of department supplies as required.
• Monitor and restock Reprocessing department inventory.
• Enter requisitions for maintenance of equipment and building services as required.
• Provide patient care within Personal Support Worker scope of practice as required.
• Follow policies/standards pertaining to the safe handling and disposal of hazardous drug waste.
• Prepare exam rooms and ensure dirty linen is disposed of as per HSN policies.
• Complete Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) forms with patients as required.
• Follow established work standards for each specific department (radiation, chemo, clinics).
• Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
• Participate in hospital training and assist with improvement initiatives as required.
• Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
• Minimum of a Personal Support Worker Certificate from an accredited college.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
• Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Gentle persuasion approaches (GPA) to dementia care are preferred.
• Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of six (6) months' experience working as a Personal Support Worker in a hospital environment, preferably in an oncology setting.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Asepsis.
• Demonstrated ability to safely handle equipment, materials and loads of up to18 kilograms.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
• Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients, physicians, volunteers and the public.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member and independently.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of equipment used in the delivery of patient care.
• Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
• Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
• Ability to prioritize tasks.
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Oncology specific terminology.
• Demonstrated compliance with HSN's privacy policy.
• Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
