The Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University, requires part-time contract teaching faculty (CTF) to teach the course listed below at the Waterloo campus. Following is a brief description of the course to indicate the content and level of difficulty. Application items below suggested as optional are strongly recommended. Inclusion and assistance is also required regarding any teaching work that follows AODA guidelines for students requiring and requesting assistance with their coursework and learning. Position Summary:

An introduction to all aspects of the operatic art form, including other genres of music theatre. Through experiential learning, students acquire the foundations of stagecraft, including acting, role preparation, stage makeup and movement. Some rehearsals and performances occur outside of scheduled class times. These will be confirmed with the successful applicant in advance. The course is designed for voice majors who normally have already completed 2 years of university level studio voice instruction, and in some cases, piano majors with an interest in opera coaching and collaborative pianism. While the course is required for performance majors, it is also open to all voice (and piano) majors interested in growing their skill in this highly collaborative art form. The course essentially functions as a paraprofessional working experience where students learn the tools of the operatic trade, equipping them with the fundamental foundational skills for the kinds of portfolio careers that may await them post-graduation.

Qualifications - Required: MMus with significant opera coaching/conducting experience at national or international level. Opera Diploma or other post-graduate diploma (Artist Diploma, Licentiate etc.) with significant national or international performing/coaching/conducting experience.

Qualifications - Areas of Specialization: Successful applicants for Music Director should have demonstrated expertise in operatic repertoire (at the keyboard, conducting and coaching), strong working command of the major operatic languages (French, Italian, German) and evidence of excellence in teaching.

Qualifications - Asset: DMA or PhD in music subdiscipline relevant to Opera direction, published scholarship in opera, and experience coaching/conducting in musical theatre genres considered an asset

Salary: $21,643.28 (This course is classified as a small ensemble, but due to the contact hours the course is compensated at the rate for large ensemble).
