Job Description


The Psychology Department is seeking applications from qualified individuals to provide support services to the Department of Psychology. This position involves contact with one of the largest academic departments at UPEI offering both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a PsyD in Clinical Psychology. The successful applicant will report directly to the Chair of Psychology and work closely with Faculty members who teach and research in the cognitive and behavioral neuroscience areas of the department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide core operational support to the behavioral, cognitive, and neuroscience-related laboratory activities in the Department of Psychology including:

Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience Course Support:

  • Assistance in the implementation of laboratory sections/tutorials in consultation with the course instructor, including: Moodle maintenance, managing attendance, updating materials as needed
  • Support for individual and group research projects in various behavioral, cognitive and neuroscience laboratory activities
  • Assistance in oversight of students using aquatics facility
  • Assisting students in equipment use (ex. microscopes, pipettes, analytical balances, specialized audio and video equipment, etc.)
  • Oversight and implementation of Laboratory Health and Safety Protocols, oversight of student CCAC User Training Requirements and WHIMIS training in Lab-based courses, SPSS and/or Jamovi training and assistance
  • Assistance in marking lab exercises
Technical support and Equipment/lab maintenance:
  • Ensure department and laboratory computers have current versions of relevant software (such as BORIS, SNIFFY, JAMOVI, etc.), provide Moodle updates for labs and test banks
  • Assist students (undergraduate, honors, and graduate) with various laboratory-related technical supports
  • Oversee and conduct the regular maintenance and upgrading of laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Maintain the regular maintenance and use of the various laboratories and facilities for the Department\'s specialized Aquatics, Behavioral, Cognitive, and Neuroscience, Teaching and Research Laboratories
  • Assist in the ordering, acquisition, and use of laboratory equipment
Health & Safety:
  • Support the Department Health and Safety Officer in the implementation and safe use of all laboratory equipment and supplies and to keep updated records on all specified health and safety issues in the relevant laboratories and to ensure these standards are met in student activities in the designated laboratories
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor\'s degree (Honors preferred) with relevant course background, laboratory experience and skills, in Psychology (related fields may be considered)
  • Competence in basic statistical, behavioral, and histology techniques
  • Familiarity with modern computer technologies for the purposes of assisting students in various course and laboratory activities, including Moodle, Zoom, MS Office Suite, Jamovi, BORIS, SNIFFY, SUPER LAB, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in CCAC Guidelines for Laboratory Animal Use and Care
  • Some knowledge of neuroanatomy, and the ability to safely use and mix various chemical solutions.
  • Experience in, and maintenance of, various types of laboratory equipment (pipettes, analytical balances, video recorders, microscopes, etc.).
  • Experience and knowledge in the operations of a laboratory aquatics facility would be an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills important
  • Must be able to work independently and problem-solve, be detail oriented, have excellent analytical and planning abilities, and strong motivation and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of UPEI operations, its regulations and policies is an asset
