The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia's 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. The Vehicle Transportation Inspection Division of Public Works is responsible for inspection and compliance of all vehicles that use our highways.
We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to all road users in our province.
About Our Opportunity
As the Motor Carrier Officer, you are the face of the Division that is responsible for the inspection and compliance of the public passenger industry. You are instrumental in ensuring that carriers meet the federal and provincial requirements for safe and reliable public transportation services.
Vehicles which you will inspect include intercity buses, charter buses, transit coaches, articulated transit coaches, school buses, wheelchair accessible buses, amphibious buses and commercial vehicles of all types.
Primary Accountabilities
Daily, you are responsible for the compliance of the various important Acts and Regulations which guide the industry. You will perform facility-based and on road inspections of public passenger vehicles; ensuring that vehicles are operating safely, in accordance with the law, and within the scope of operating authorities issued by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. You will perform semi-annual safety inspections, required for every public passenger vehicle registered in NS; verifying and reviewing associated maintenance, driver and National Safety Code records.
Your expertise and sound judgement are essential in determining vehicle fitness. Inspectors are required to identify violations as they occur and take appropriate enforcement action; this may include, but is not limited to, Summary Offence Tickets, Motor Carrier Violations, and Show Cause Hearings in accordance with the various Acts and Regulations.
Qualifications and Experience
You must be a Red Seal Certified Truck and Transport Mechanic with four (4) years of related experience in a mechanical repair environment; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Appointment as a Special Constable is necessary, therefore a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and a clean criminal record are required. Candidates are asked to please submit a copy of their current Driver's Abstract, as well as a Criminal Records Search with their application.
