Job Summary
The Mixed Methods Researcher will be a key member of Dr. Dean Regier's Regulatory Science Lab research team, contributing to UBC's newly launched AI and Health Network. We are seeking an outstanding individual with strong qualitative research experience and interest in mixed methods. This role includes stakeholder and community engagement, managing virtual and on-site research operations, oversee data collection, analysis, interpretation, manuscript preparation, and knowledge translation.
This position will provide you the opportunity to develop a nuanced understanding of public sentiment towards AI use in healthcare through engagement with patients and physicians in the BC healthcare system. The Mixed Methods Researcher will work closely with a diverse team of health economists, data scientists, physicians, epidemiologists, postdoctoral fellows, domain experts, and graduate students.
This is a full-time, 1-year term position, with the possibility of extension.
Organizational Status
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
The ATM at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is established by the Faculty of Medicine. The ATM is a nucleus for translational and regulatory science research, education and training, and innovation. The ATM is a strategic imperative for the Faculty of Medicine and has a mandate to collaborate with other units in the Faculty of Medicine, the wider University, and beyond to accelerate the translational medicine continuum. The ATM will drive impactful medical and policy research to create new knowledge to improve health outcomes and benefit society. The ATM is the nucleus for the development of new academic and training programs, creating a cutting-edge ecosystem in which top educators and researchers train the next generation of health innovators.
The Mixed Methods Researcher works independently under the direction of Dr. Dean Regier in his Regulatory Science Lab, contributing to both technical and project management activities. The incumbent will interact and work with other faculty, research staff, and graduate students within SPPH, the ATM, and external collaborators.
Work PerformedProvides operational leadership and management of the mixed methods research study.
Leads daily research work of the Regulatory Science Lab's qualitative and mixed methods research and knowledge translation projects from design through dissemination.
Oversees, designs and refines qualitative study protocols, recruitment strategies, and data collection instruments for focus groups, interviews, and surveys.
Integrates insights on public, patient, and physician preferences and sentiment for AI-augmented healthcare decision-making with a prospective qualitative study that pursues direct community engagement. This will include overseeing collecting, analyzing, and reporting on qualitative data and organizing research and evaluation activities.
Develops the framework for utilizing data in analysis for engagement sessions, focus groups, and interviews
Facilitates virtual and in-person engagement sessions, including moderating focus groups, conducting interviews, and liaising with patients, clinicians, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
Develops project plans, work plans, timelines, goals, and grant applications and ethical review submissions
Produces manuscripts, reports, presentations, and other knowledge translation products for academic and non-academic audiences, including design, synthesis, dissemination and evaluation.
Prepares and manages ethics applications and amendments for qualitative and mixed methods studies, ensuring compliance with privacy and data governance requirements.
Translates findings into actionable recommendations for community and health system partners, policy audiences, and academic publications.
Oversees the project's performance by reviewing project milestones, ensuring effective documentation management, and ensuring deliverables are completed within scope, budget, and timelines.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent is given wide latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment in performing specialized duties and responsibilities. A lack of judgment could harm the research team and partner organizations' research and funding. The incumbent will interact with multiple researchers across various organizations to address their data needs and research findings, and discretion is vital.
Consequences of inappropriate judgment exercised by position include:
1. Loss of funding opportunities and collaborative partnerships.
2. Compromising the quality of research findings.
3. Missed project deadlines.
4. Damage to the reputation of any or all of the investigators and/or their affiliated organizations.
Failure to maintain a high degree of attention to detail could negatively affect the accuracy of research findings.

Supervision Received
The incumbent will be able to work independently with minimal supervision and regularly report to the Regulatory Science Lab Principal Investigator. The incumbent will also receive support from research collaborators as needed. Performance will be reviewed periodically based on the quality and timeliness of work.
Supervision Given
The incumbent may assist the Regulatory Science Lab Principal Investigator with the supervision and mentoring of junior research trainees, such as summer students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred QualificationsMaster's Degree in Public or Population Health, Health Economics, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics or related discipline preferred.
Related experience in research with qualitative and mixed methods, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced knowledge of research issues at the intersection of healthcare and AI, and demonstrated competence in applying qualitative, health services, and statistical research methods.
Detailed knowledge of qualitative study design, data collection, and analysis. Proficiency with one or more qualitative analysis software tools (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti) an asset.
Experience with preference elicitation methods (e.g., discrete choice experiments) is an asset.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally. Experience working with patients, clinicians, and community partners is an asset.
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex data and present information in concise and meaningful ways. Experience creating effective knowledge translation products for diverse audiences (e.g., conference presentations and posters, policy briefs, infographics, and webinars) is an asset.
Demonstrated organizational skills to generate work plans to meet project deadlines within timeline, scope, and budget.
