The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mines Technical Lead - Projects to join our Sudbury Mines team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The Mines Technical Lead \xe2\x80\x93 Projects will be responsible for managing an effective engineering and technical services team and supervises the mine planning and surveying required for the mine operations to execute the project development mine plan within the Home Safe framework. Working with the team as the senior mines technical advisor, the incumbent will forecast and schedule the required activities for effective mine planning, while providing guidance and input to project for the required process activities to be completed, ensuring the plan commitments are met. Manage FEL 3 engineering mine designs to ensure it lines up with the mines short- and long-term plans. Work with both the engineering firms, project team and the mine operations team to ensure that all the requirements of the FEL 3 study documentation is complete.

  • Implement work plan for all project development at the NAPG Sudbury Mines ensuring all systems, standards and reporting are aligned with the existing systems in place at each Mine.
  • Manage communication between the existing NAPG Sudbury Mines Engineering departments and MTS to ensure that all short- and long-term plans are accomplished
  • Is responsible to ensure the mine design meets the regulatory requirements for the jurisdiction in which the project is located.
  • Provides input in the project execution plan and schedule
  • Identifies opportunities for safety, technology, mine productivity and cost improvements while ensuring the safeguarding of life, health, environment, and property.
Accountabilities:
  • Develop work plans and schedules for contractor subordinates to comply with the engineering/execution plans developed by the Chief Mine Engineer, Mine Manager and his/her work team.
  • Ensures all development layouts/designs produced for underground development meet or exceed existing Vale Mine Design/ Engineering standards.
  • Provide updates to the mine area schedule to assist the Superintendent of the area with risk analysis options for decision making and setting the required by dates for work to be completed.
  • Manage the execution of the safety plan for his/her area.
  • 1-to-5-year mine plan for area including development, drilling, production and backfill schedules and mining sequence. Submission to the CME for final consolidation and review.
  • Monitors and executes the Mine Design Package, ensuring it is adhered to.
  • Problem solves issues that have potential to adversely impact the mine by reviewing with the CME and Mine Superintendent and escalated to the Mine Manager if required. (i.e., production targets, ground control, ventilation, fill, mining sequence, mining regulations
  • Analyze, evaluate, present and initiate improvement projects for the area as required. Includes preparation of studies including economic analysis and financial viability of projects and business opportunities (ore zones, mining methods, cost savings, equipment rationalization, evaluation of high cost areas, etc.).
  • Audit that contractor direct reports are applying Vale MTS guidelines, incorporating mining regulations in the daily operation of the division/mine and in the development of the annual mining plan.
  • Provide input, review, and sign off on drilling, development, blasting letters/layouts and backfill packages. Approves the layouts so that they meet the requirements of the operation in a timely manner and with respect to HomeSafe principles.
  • Monitor the Annual Capital Project Development of the area as required.
  • Co-ordinates the mine engineering requirements and tradeoff studies that are required for FEL 3 study and Detailed Engineering in accordance with Vale SPE deliverables.
  • Reviews the mine design report sections of the FEL 3 Study
  • Reviews the work packages for the mine design in consultation with Operations, Maintenance, mines technical services in geotechnical, ventilation, infrastructure (refuge stations, drainage/dewatering, storage, etc.), backfill, mobile equipment, maintenance (garages and other facilities), and power to define the consulting engineering firms scope of work.
About You

Education:
  • Must have a College Diploma in Mines Engineering Technology or University Degree in Mines Engineering
  • CET or P. Eng. Designation is preferred
Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of planning & design experience
  • Proficiency in Deswik is required
  • 8-10 years of experience in this field
  • Problem Solving and Analysis - Ability to decipher and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. The candidate must be able to accurately inform, capture interest and gain support in a clear and concise manner.
  • Health safety and environment. The Candidate must be able to recognize, prioritize, and understand the controls required to mitigate risks in the workplace.
  • Decision Making - The candidate must be able to consider the situation, the issues and the people involved. This involves identifying, defining, and analyzing problems or situations. It also involves the use of reason and the formulation of viable solutions and potential improvements.
  • Drive for Sustainable Results - Must be able to use the formal and informal technical and human resources systems and contacts, including supervisors, managers, departments, etc., to achieve needed results.
