Job Description


The Ottawa International Airport Authority oversees the Airport as a whole and the Building and Millwright Services team is looking to hire a Millwright-Industrial Mechanic in a permanent capacity. As part of this small but integral team, you will be responsible to perform preventive maintenance and repairs to all mechanical equipment that provides service to the operation of the Airport, Airlines and tenants. When first hired you will work days Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., until you have obtained your RAIC (Airport Restricted Area Identification Card) and completed your training period. Then you will be required to work a shift rotation consisting of non-regular days and hours (mornings-4:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. / evenings 1:30 p.m. to midnight) rotations will include weekends and statutory holidays. This position reports to the Supervisor of Electrical Maintenance. Essential Functions

  • Maintains, inspects and repairs airport machinery and mechanical equipment according to layout plans using specialized tools.
  • Maintains, inspects and repairs the baggage system using specialized equipment and control workstation (CWS software).
  • Maintains, inspect and repairs all airport property sliding doors, motorize doors and overhead doors using specialized tools.
  • Maintains, inspects and repairs all loading bridges including but not limited to bearings, hydraulic systems and mechanical components.
  • Required to work in extreme weather conditions while in an elevated work platform, including but not limited to clearing snow and ice around roof edges of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) and Parking garage.
  • Read diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
  • Operates hoisting and lifting devices up to 50 tons to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery and operation of a bucket truck.
  • Inspects machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions;
  • Adjusts machinery and replaces defective parts.
  • Fits bearings, aligns gears and shafts, attaches motors and connects couplings and belts using specialized tools.
  • Performs preventive and operational maintenance within strict time restraints to allow for optimum operational needs.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs to hydraulic and pneumatic systems and controls.
  • Welds and fabricates a wide variety of parts and components from various metals and synthetic materials.
  • Advises and instructs contractors in the design of various parts and components.
  • Participates in maintenance/skills in-house training programs and continuous on the job training;
  • Responds to calls from the Airport Operations Coordination Center (AOCC) while on shift for other trades not on a shift rotation.
  • Carries out maintenance, inspections and repairs to motorized and non-motorized gates;
  • Maintains Lave Hut Hydraulic trap door system.
  • Performs regular inspections of escalators throughout the PTB.
  • First point of contact for responding to escalator and elevator trouble calls.
  • Inspects and repairs air-handling units, exhaust fans, and exhaust rail systems.
  • Inspects and repairs the adult change tables and other furniture and equipment.
  • Maintains and inspects fire life safety system such as fire separations, smoke exhaust fans and fire extinguishers.
  • From time to time, assists operations with emergency tasks.
  • Documents maintenance activities on computerized maintenance management software (CMMS)
  • Other related duties as requested.
To succeed in this role you have to be able to do the following things:
  • Possess excellent coordination while always remaining vigilant and alert while performing duties around aircraft, airline equipment, live and online conveyor systems, loading bridges and other equipment. Work within time lines set forth by airport operations to ensure operational efficiency and readiness. Excellent manual dexterity to use the various types of tools and equipment.
  • You must be able to form and fabricate components to repair machines, equipment, etc.
  • You must be able to follow written directions, interpret single line diagrams, systems schematics, working drawings, work instructions, and other technical documents.
  • You must be able to make calculations involving fractions, decimals, percentages, and common hand book formulas and use written descriptions, technical drawings, and precision measuring tools.
  • They must be able to comprehend and trouble-shoot mechanical systems
  • They must be able to work independently, yet collaboratively, with the Building and Millwright Services team as well as other trades and airport departments.
  • The successful candidate must be able to assess priorities, show attention to detail, be flexible with respect to changing assignments and must have effective interpersonal skills.
  • These abilities, as well as a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.
Essential Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized Millwright Apprenticeship Program, 433A licence Millwright and an Interprovincial Red Seal Licence.
  • Experience in the operations, maintenance and repair of hydraulic, conveyor, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems.
  • Specialized knowledge of the principles underlying mechanical work.
  • Knowledge of industrial heating, cooling and ventilation systems, elevating devices and controls i.e. electricity, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in mechanical equipment elevated work platforms.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English.
The Following Will Be Considered An Asset
  • Bilingualism (English and French).
A Condition Of Employment For This Role Is:
  • You must be in possession of a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence (Class G or equivalent) along with a driver\xe2\x80\x99s abstract (issued within the last month).
  • Once hired you must successfully complete a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC), and successfully pass examinations for both an Airport Vehicle Operator\xe2\x80\x99s Permit (AVOP) and a Radiotelephone Operators Certificate.
  • You must be fully vaccinated (at least 2 doses) against Covid-19 and provide proof if asked.
  • A successful applicant who passes their final interview must undertake an Alcohol and Drug Screening test.
