Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:




Must know all relevant SSOP and MWI for the department and equipment they are operating.

At the start of shift:*
+ Receive and verify material at work centre by matching the strip tag with the work order and entering all data onto the log sheets.
+ The tube/pipe is through checked for proper O.D., wall and length measurements. This information is accurately entered onto the S.P.C. charts.
+ The tube/pipe is fully inspected for visual defects.
+ The welding parameters are checked on the mill to ensure that the proper amperage, volts, gases and mill speed are used as per welding parameter sheet.
+ All cleaning pads, rags, etc. are to be changed.
+ Oil for the hammer and O.D. condition is present and the oilers are working properly.
+ The annealing temperature is as stated on the work order and the tube is bright with no discoloration if being bright annealed.
+ The weld is properly hammered or bead rolled.
+ The tube is properly O.D. conditioned.
+ The tensile is handed into the lab with completed identification.
+ The printing on the tube/pipe is legible and accurate per the work order.
+ Destructive testing i.e. bend test is done per the work order.
+ Tube is checked for the proper beading and passes the required plug gauge and/or ring gauge.
+ Verify the tube, in coiled form, is of the proper diameter and hydrostatic tested for leakage.
+ The spare coils on the uncoiler are of the correct gauge, type, heat, etc. and it is correctly installed (sharp edge up/down).



During the course of the shift:*
+ The sling is inspected for damages before hoisting a coil onto the uncoiler.
+ Remove all oil spills, debris, etc. as soon as it is noticed.
+ The required S.P.C. charts are done at the required intervals.
+ Deburr all tubes/pipes and carefully lower into the crib.
+ Do constant checks of the following:
- Visual inspection of the product.
- The welding arc is centered between the strip edges.
- Close attention is paid to the butt welding of the spare coil.
- Plug gauging and/or ring gauging of the tubes.
+ Gather spare electrode, wiping pads, rags, cutters, saw blades, grinding belts, O.D. conditioner, ball bearings, etc.
+ In your spare time, prepare a gas/plug line assembly.
+ Check butt welder electrode in advance of doing the butt weld.
+ Plan ahead for a wall thickness change or a complete changeover.
+ Change wipers and rags at 4-6 hour intervals.
+ Check printing on the tubes to ensure accuracy is always present.
+ Pickle 2' samples every four (4) hours to check the porosity and other defects on the black annealed pipe.
+ For off line eddy testing products, request having a few pieces tests at regular intervals - every 2-3 hours.
+ As a precautionary measure, do reverse bends, flattens and flares test regularly and inspect or have them inspected closely for defects, throughout your shift.
+ Check voltage, amperage, gases and annealing temperature for accuracy.
+ Ensure any deviation from the welding parameter is acknowledge and signed off by the welding department and/or your mill leaders.
+ Check the work order constantly to ensure all instructions are being followed.

Near the end of shift:*
+ All working areas and aisle ways are properly swept.
+ The mill base is free from oil, used gloves, rags, wood, scrap tubing, etc.
+ All data is filled on all log sheets (production and mill operating data logs).
+ S.P.C. charts are completed.
+ The tubes/pipes on the unload table are deburred and cribbed.
+ Spare uncoiler is loaded up and spare saw blade, cutter, etc. are present at the mill.
+ The work order is correctly signed off.
+ Tools are cleaned and put away in their correct places.
+ Communicate verbally with other operator that is taking over on the general performance of the mill and what is to be expected, and any other concerns he/she should know about.

Notify the Mill Leadhand when:

+ The mill has to stop for any reason. In cases of a pulled out plug, tube/pipe burnt off or jammed up etc., stop the mill immediately. Notify your Mill Leadhand.
+ The operator is unable to improve on sub-standard tube/pipe and too much scrap is generated.
+ A destructive bend test failure or leaker is found.
+ Deviating from the welding procedure and work order.
+ A mill problem that requires the immediate attention of maintenance.
+ Out of strip in the staging area.
+ Out of work orders at the mill.
+ Out of hammers, O.D. condition oil and any other stocked item for the mill.
+ There is a set-up or mill tooling problem.
+ A potential hazard exists.

AUTHORITIES:




Ensure proper materials are available to complete the job in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Any issues with safety, quality and manufacturing of the tubes is to be immediately brought to the attention of the departmental Leadhand for resolution.



ROLE REQUIREMENTS:




Self-motivated to accomplish job assignments with minimum supervision. Demonstrates responsibility and determination to achieve production expectations/standards. Demonstrates through recognized training the solid knowledge to operate the equipment, fill customer orders, identify and resolve problems in a timely fashion. Works harmoniously with other employees through good communication and work skills. Proficient in reading and accurately determining work order requests, tolerance limits and other special manufacturing requests applicable to this work centre. Demonstrates accuracy, precision and good concentration while on the job. Ability to make basic decisions and judgement calls related to the work order. Good co-ordination and alertness in operating machines. Ability to work well under pressure and managing stress. Capable of training other operators. When necessary, a shift change may be required. Demonstrates organizational skills to maintain a safe and accessible work centre. Completion of a criminal background check as required by CTPAT requirements.

Demonstrates a positive attitude towards safety and models safety for other employees at all times. Understand that it is mandatory to use and/or wear all personal protective equipment provided by the Company. Reports all accidents, incidents and near misses and supports in determining corrective actions to eliminate workplace hazards. Practices safe work habits as detailed in Samuels/ATC's safety policies, procedures, C.S.A and the Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario. Understands and completes necessary health & safety training through Samuel's Safety Training program 24/7 and ensures renewal training is completed as per company requirements.

Grade 12 or equivalent experience Good verbal, written and communication skills Basic computer skills Mechanical ability
