The Opportunity

We are currently looking for a Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Project Liaison to join our Health, Safety & Environment team in a temporary position. Reporting to the Manager, Mi\'kmaq Relations, you will be responsible for providing administrative support to our Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Relations Team, including the occasional field work assignments, and liaising with Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq communities across Nova Scotia.

As the Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Project Liaison you will:

  • Participate in site visits with Kwilmu\'kw Maw-klusuaqn (KMK) and Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq community representatives to Hydro and Capital Project sites.
  • Prepare for and participate in Working Group meetings, Monthly KMK project update meetings, and other meetings with Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq communities.
  • Assist with environmental field work such as hydro relicensing.
  • Assist with activities to engage and build collaborative relationships with Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq communities across Nova Scotia.
  • Advise on and facilitate the engagement process for Capital Projects.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Nova Scotia Power team on areas of Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq interest.
  • Assisting with the preparation and delivery of presentations for engagement activities and cultural awareness training.
  • Support delivery of Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Bursary Program.
  • Engage with Indigenous Employment Officers about opportunities at Nova Scotia Power.
What skills will make you successful?
  • A Grade XII education or equivalent, with reading and writing skills necessary to perform the duties of the position safely and effectively.
  • Proficiency in the Windows environment, including the use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as email.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate strong relationships within the Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Nations such as with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq Chiefs, Indigenous Employment Officers, Cultural Organizations, Elders, Knowledge Holders, and Community Leaders.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication and community engagement skills, including the ability to build healthy collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and diplomacy skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq and/or other Indigenous ways of teaching, learning, and knowing.
  • Experience working in and with Mi\xe2\x80\x99kmaq or other Indigenous communities considered a valuable asset.
  • Has lived or has professional experience working with First Nation Communities.
  • Indigenous ancestry considered an asset, must self-identify.
