M\xc3\xa9tis Family Connections Worker Location: Provincial Head Office, #100, 11738 Kingsway NW, Edmonton, AB Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate is Found Position Status: Full time (40 hours/week) The Organization Since its inception in 1928, the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the M\xc3\xa9tis within Alberta. The MNA is led by a democratically elected Council. This Council works toward the mandate of the MNA, supporting practices of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness for M\xc3\xa9tis Albertans in governments\xe2\x80\x99 policy and decision-making processes. The Opportunity The Provincial Office of the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta (MNA) is recruiting for a M\xc3\xa9tis Family Connections Worker (MFCW). The M\xc3\xa9tis Family Connections Worker reports to the M\xc3\xa9tis Family Resource Program Manager and is a part of the Children and Family Services department. The successful candidate will support the registration process for those who are adopted and seeking M\xc3\xa9tis citizenship. The MFCW will act as a navigator and liaison between various provincial bodies of Vital Statistics/Records, Registry departments, and the applicant to support the obtaining of pertinent birth documents and adoption records for the purpose of MNA citizenship. The successful candidate will be professional, exhibit strong interpersonal skills, and possess an ability to handle sensitive and confidential information while using trauma-informed approaches. Key Responsibilities

  • Advocate on behalf of MNA citizenship applicants who have trouble obtaining pertinent birth documents and records due to various reasons, such as residential schools, 60\xe2\x80\x99s scoop, Child and Family Services involvement, or adoption processes.
  • Assist with the MNA citizenship registration process, including requesting documents, data entering, and processing applications.
  • Provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed support to applicants receiving sensitive personal information.
  • Develop a general knowledge of MNA and community programming and supports for the purpose of referral.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of internal processes regarding MNA citizenship for adoptees.
  • Explore new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration with stakeholders to best support M\xc3\xa9tis individuals who were adopted.
  • Maintain confidentiality, ensure correct processes are followed, and maintain proper storage of sensitive documents.
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and external stakeholders and be a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Complete administrative duties and projects, and attend meetings as required.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

  • Ability to build trust and rapport with applicants, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, helpful attitude and be empathetic and non-judgmental when assisting M\xc3\xa9tis Albertans.
  • Ability to work effectively in a stressful environment and communicate and respond calmly in difficult situations.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Qualifications
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Services or a related field.
  • Two (2) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working in the Human Services field.
  • Working knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Protection of Personal Information Act.
  • Indigenous Awareness Training is an asset.
Other Requirements
  • Position will be based in Edmonton.
  • Available to work weekends and evenings as required.
  • Some travel within Alberta is a requirement.
  • Must have a Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and an operational vehicle.
  • Acceptable attainment of an Intervention Record Check and Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
