About the Role
Shibogama First Nations Council is seeking a dedicated and compassionate
Mental Health Therapist
to provide therapeutic services to children and adolescents in WapekekaLake First Nation. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference by supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of youth in a close-knit northern community.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with
Indigenous children and youth
, an understanding of
remote/northern community contexts
, and a commitment to providing trauma-informed, culturally safe care in partnership with families, schools, and community members.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and create individualized treatment plans.
Provide one-on-one and group therapy to children and adolescents using evidence-based approaches (CBT, DBT, play therapy, etc.).
Offer crisis intervention and suicide risk support as needed.
Collaborate with families, schools, healthcare providers, and community supports to ensure wraparound care.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation, case notes, and data for reporting purposes.
Provide education and guidance to families and caregivers on mental health and coping strategies.
Stay current on best practices in pediatric and adolescent mental health.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related field.
Registration (or eligibility for registration) with a relevant professional college/regulatory body.
Experience providing therapy to children and youth, particularly Indigenous youth.
Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practices.
Previous experience working in remote or northern communities is an asset.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with families, schools, and healthcare professionals.
Familiarity with case management and special education processes is an asset.
Contract Details
This is an
independent contractor position
.
Contract includes travel and accommodation while in the community.
Competitive daily/weekly rate based on experience and qualifications.
Travel in and out of the community is arranged by Shibogama First Nations Council.
Travel is one week and remote one week, required to be in the community twice a month.
