Under the direction of the Manager and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Therapist is responsible for providing specialized mental health assessment and consultation services in the context of clients presenting by walk in, referral or via EMS to the Urgent Care Centre at Sheldon M Chumir Health Centre, who require urgent crisis assessment in relation to acute mental health issues. The position is clinical in nature. Therapists are responsible for providing mental health assessments, therapeutic interventions, referrals and advocacy. Clinically focused liaison and consultation to colleagues within the health centre and with community services providers is also required. Therapists are required to have awareness and sensitivity to working with diverse populations. The incumbent must be able to provide service to the inner city, hard to serve population who suffer from severe mental illness and addiction issues, and who face multiple problems in the community, including homelessness, social isolation, and marginalization; and who often encounter significant barriers to accessing mental health and medical services. Awareness and knowledge of concurrent disorders is necessary. Critical clinical decisions of life threatening proportions are made on a daily basis in order to assure the safety of clients and the community, as well as to plan appropriate assessment and treatment follow-up. The Therapists must make such decisions spontaneously and independently, particularly during evening and weekend shifts. Please note that this line is primarily Day/early evening shift.
