Who We Are

Health and Counselling Services provides multidisciplinary care to students through our integrated health services (physicians, psychiatry, nursing, social work) and counselling (counsellors, psychologists, practicums and interns). We also support students through a Health Promotion function that works to apply well-being lenses to settings within the university. We are part of Student Services which includes housing, financial aid, conduct, immigration advising and more.

About the Role

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN / Mental Health Nurse) is accountable for providing critical (e.g., life/death and quality of life) mental health support and specialized care to students presenting with complex mental health issues (e.g., psychosis, personality disorder, ADHD and comorbidities). The role collaborates with stakeholders towards the safety, prognosis and positive health outcomes of students. The position acts as a point person in crisis management and acute psychiatry including mentorship to medical and clinical staff, campus partners, campus case managers and leadership (e.g., managers to the President\xe2\x80\x99s Office) both internally and externally. In addition, provides acute psychiatry expertise and crisis leadership to the ongoing review of services, programs and strategies that support students\xe2\x80\x99 health, safety and well-being. This role delivers expert advice to leadership and campus partners on how to best manage students with complex mental health concerns, via de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, medicinal and nonmedicinal treatment modalities, and referrals to hospital and specialized care.

Qualifications

Bachelors of Psychiatric Nursing degree or equivalent, and seven years of related experience in areas such as child and adolescent mental health, acute psychiatry, emergency mental health, community based mental health. Ability to maintain a current CPR Certification Health Care Provider Level.

  • Expert knowledge and experience of mental health assessment, psychopharmacology (medical/pharmaceutical), intervention techniques, crisis theory, abnormal psychology, DSM-5 diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (or latest edition), de-escalation techniques, Trauma Informed Practice, Recovery Based Model of Care, and community resource utilization.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of adolescent and youth mental health issues and disorders.
  • Expert knowledge of acute crisis intervention and psychiatric emergency triaging assessments.
  • Expert working knowledge and experience in mental health triage, assessment, and crisis interventions skills.
  • Expert ability to establish and maintain rapport with psychotic and crisis-prone people.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Infant Act, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent ability to facilitate and enhance interagency and interdepartmental problem solving.
