Overview:
The Mental Health Diversion/Court Support Worker is responsible to the Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Mental Health Association Kenora Branch. The Mental Health Diversion/Court Support Worker is expected to work as a member of a team, and is expected to participate in regular peer supervision, coordination with the Dual Diagnosis Court Diversion/Court Support Worker, Forensic Case Manager, Rent Supplement Housing Case Manager, Kenora Justice Center Mental Health Support Worker and attend regular supervision with the Chief Executive Officer.
Qualifications:
Degree in social work or demonstrated equivalent, MSW preferred, Regulated through the OCSWSSW
In depth knowledge of the criminal justice system and the Mental Health Act obtained through academic training or practical experience
Knowledge of mental health/mental illness, and mental health difficulties
Knowledge of developmental disabilities, FASD, acquired Brain Injury etc
Highly developed screening, assessment skills
Highly developed advocacy skills
Working knowledge of community resources, and agencies
Ability to build community linkages and networks to ensure planning and delivery of individualized services
Competence for diverse populations
Ability to work independently
Computer literacy and recording skills
Duties:
Adherence to all policies of Canadian Mental Health Association Kenora Branch
Assurance of confidentiality of all client, personnel, and organizational records and information
Screening of clients who have been identified as potential candidates for diversion or court support services
Liaison with criminal justice system personnel and community resources
Consult, advocate with criminal justice system, community mental health/ developmental services systems custodial facilities and family members.
Arranging of psychiatric appointments for individuals within the criminal justice system who are detained at a correctional institution and who are in the community
Facilitate and monitor the implementation of treatment/service/release plans for clients of the program
Assessment of client need and the development of appropriate service plans for diversion, treatment, court support and/or release
Provide supportive counselling and assistance to clients in understanding the Criminal Justice System and justice process
Advocacy and navigation within the forensic mental health system; i.e the Regional Forensic Unit, District and Regional HSJCCs, Ontario Review Board etc.
Collaborate with key supports and resources in the community justice, corrections
Assessment of client need and the development of appropriate service plans for diversion,
Provide education for client, family and communities
Provide consultation and information to the judiciary, Crown and Defence counsel on cases referred for disposition
Act as a mental health resource to criminal justice officials, custodial facilities and family members
Facilitate and monitor the implementation of treatment/service/release plans
Maintain client files consistent with the policies and procedures of Canadian Mental Health Association
Coordinate referrals to Forensic Psychiatry Assessment and ensure collection of collateral information
Collect and report statistical and demographic information
Participate in staff meetings/team meetings (e.g. Kenora Rainy River District Human Services & Justice Coordinating Committee)
Monitor program policies and procedures to assure their applicability to current practice
Draft all necessary correspondence/service plans/reports
Participate in administrative and office functions as needed
Participate in training and educational opportunities
Participate on specific Committees or task or work groups as assigned by the Supervisor
Provide a safe environment by ensuring adherences to Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHIMIS and Safe Work Procedures; including but not limited to Fire, Disaster and Evacuation Plans
Ensure client safety and client safety activities are emphasized throughout orientation of new staff members
Support an environment which avoids, prevents and corrects all activities or actions which may result in client safety incidents in the delivery of mental health services
Responsible for self-care
