Reporting to the Executive Director at the Nawican Friendship Centre, the Mental Health and Addictions Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and delivery of culturally safe, trauma-informed mental health and addictions services. Based at the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Cultural Centre (NBYCC), this individual will lead program development, provide direct client services, and collaborate with internal staff and community partners to support individuals and families affected by substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.
The Coordinator will oversee assessments, treatment planning, counselling services, and referral processes while also facilitating education, prevention, and wellness initiatives across the community. This role requires a strong understanding of Indigenous cultural perspectives, evidence-based practices in addiction and mental health care, and a commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive environment for healing and personal growth. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, self-directed professional who embraces the spirit of the Friendship Centre Movement and is dedicated to promoting community wellness.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Coordinate and oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of mental health and addictions programming
Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed counselling to individuals, families, and groups
Conduct client intakes, assessments, and develop individualized treatment and recovery plans
Facilitate ongoing support, including follow-up, aftercare, and relapse prevention services
Organize and deliver educational workshops, community presentations, and harm reduction initiatives
Build and maintain strong working relationships with community partners, referral agencies, and health service providers
Ensure client documentation is accurate, confidential, and in compliance with organizational and legal standards
Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Executive Director and relevant funders
Contribute to grant applications, proposals, and program funding reports as needed
Participate in staff meetings, organizational planning, and professional development activities
Support community outreach, engagement, and Nawican-hosted events
Help maintain a welcoming and inclusive Centre environment and promote the spirit of the Friendship Centre Movement
Key Competencies
Strong knowledge of addictions, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions
Experience coordinating programs and services within a community-based or Indigenous organization
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Cultural humility, respect for Indigenous values, and knowledge of local communities
Strong organizational, administrative, and time-management skills
Sound judgment and ethical decision-making in confidential settings
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, or a related field
or
a minimum of 5 years of experience in mental health and addictions service delivery, with demonstrated leadership capacity
Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or urban Indigenous service organizations is considered an asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook), with the ability to use tools efficiently for documentation and communication
Occupational First Aid certificates (or willingness to obtain)
Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive personnel information with professionalism and integrity
Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
Valid Class 5 Driver's License and a clean Driver's Abstract
Preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry (pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code).
Work Conditions
37.5 hours per week; some evening or weekend work may be required depending on client and community needs.
Work is based at the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Cultural Centre or Nawican Emergency Homeless Shelter, with travel for outreach or community engagement as necessary.
