"Sections" are groups of lawyers organized around legal practice area (such as criminal or family law) or affinity area (women lawyers, young lawyers, Indigenous lawyers). The BC Branch has more than 60 Sections that deliver various types of programming to enrolled CBABC members. Programming is coordinated by volunteers, with the assistance of BC Branch staff.

Reporting to the Sections Manager, the Sections Advisor is responsible for working with volunteer members to plan and execute 75-100 Section meetings (professional development or social events) each year, including securing speakers, venues, promotion and logistics.

The Section Advisor is part of a 10-person team delivering services and programs to CBABC members and engages with the entire CBABC staff team. The successful candidate is a detail-oriented multi-tasker, who enjoys balancing a wide array of activities, developing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, and delivering exceptional customer service.

The Sections Advisor is a full-time position executed through a hybrid of in-office and work from home hours. Our office is located in Yaletown in Vancouver, BC and is accessible by transit with nearby Expo Line and Canada Line stops. We offer a hybrid working arrangement. CBABC continues to follow all BC Worksafe guidelines including communicable disease prevention plans/COVID-19 plans as well as a mandatory vaccination policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise and manage volunteers in 25 subject-matter expert planning committees to:
  • Plan, document, and implement 3-5 in-person or virtual professional development meetings and socials per committee held between September and June
  • Secure venues, determine registrant pricing, monitor expenses
  • Create and distribute enticing meeting notices, registration pages and other notifications
  • Follow, and help planning committees to follow, applicable policies and operational procedures
  • Escalate issues as appropriate for review and approval by Sections Manager
  • Submit for payment, and track payments of vendor invoices and volunteer expense reimbursement
  • Provide technical support for virtual and hybrid meetings conducted by Zoom
  • Attend in-person professional development meetings
  • Contribute to weekly, quarterly and annual activity reports
  • Plan and implement annual processes such as volunteer recruitment, planning, and orientation
  • Contribute to ongoing process and service delivery improvements
  • Contribute to staff team meetings
  • Communicate with members via phone and email about CBABC activities, services and membership
Qualification and Skills:
  • Post Secondary Certificate
  • Minimum 5 years experience in meeting planning and execution
  • Experience and confidence in managing volunteers to prepare and follow plans
  • Experience with project management and event planning
  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals and as a team player working in a group setting
  • Strong written communication, attention to detail and proofreading skills
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, adaptable, flexible, and able to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Sound judgment and decision-making ability
  • Experience with MS Teams, Excel, Outlook, Kentico (or similar content management system), Zoom
  • Knowledge of Vimeo, Higher Logic Informz (or similar email marketing software, Cantasia, Adobe Suite an asset
  • Highly proficient in using and trouble-shooting equipment such as LCB projectors, microphones, cameras
  • Available to work approximately 20% early evenings
