Purpose of the Job

  • The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) serves as a critical strategic contributor in initiating and implementing field Medical strategies in support of the Novo Nordisk Canada Inc (NNCI) portfolio; aligned with the national Medical Affairs strategies and Global Medical Affairs guidance. The MSL will closely collaborate with field management in developing appropriate scientific approaches and solutions to support business strategies and building strong linkage among networks within the academic and clinical communities. You will also help increase awareness of the unmet needs and enhances the accurate scientific competitive positioning of NNCI products in Canada.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Actively interface with multiple external stakeholders including top Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), academic institutions, major hospitals, public and private payers, clinical investigators, and others to implement and support the overall NNCI strategies and apply the scientific and clinical data to support the therapeutic and business interests of NNCI.
  • Works in concert within MSL team to develop Scientific Communication Platforms (SCPs) for current and future pipeline products that will enhance KOL awareness with key concepts and the unmet needs in the respective therapeutic area. The MSL SCPs are closely aligned with the overall national Medical Affairs strategies and are developed in collaboration with the head office Medical Affairs staff.
  • Effectively communicates and leverages SCPs to help position KOL understanding of the science of our products for future strategic directions in medical, clinical, regulatory, and commercial.
  • Collaborates with MSL colleagues to maintain and update existing SCPs based on KOL interactions and new developments in publications and academia.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with KOLs through discussions involving research including Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISSs), Novo Nordisk Canada Inc (NNCI) marketed products and pipeline as well as competitor products and disease state.
  • Provides additional clinical support to research sites involved in NNCI clinical trials at the request of the NNCI Clinical Operations unit.
  • Establishes scientific and medical credibility with KOLs, by keeping abreast of relevant published scientific material and creates open communication lines with KOLs to monitor awareness and understanding levels and impact on NNCI business units.
  • Establishes himself/herself as an invaluable field medical resource to address queries from the NNCI field personnel in alignment with the agreed business strategies.
  • Routinely creates and presents scientific material to a wide variety of audiences (KOLs, health care professionals (HCPs), market access payers, in house training) and maintains a professional level of objectivity so as not to compromise NNCI medical leadership image and the MSL role.
  • Appropriately gathers competitive information from the field from credible sources and communicates the business impact and or potential developing trend to the corporate office on a monthly basis.
  • Utilizes SCPs on pipeline research products to establish KOL understanding through discussions related to addressing unmet needs, scientific innovation, clinical relevance, and impact on the standard treatment paradigm to maintain NNCI\'s leadership in the assigned therapeutic area.
  • At the request of the NNCI field Sales unit and in response to unsolicited questions from HCPs, presents scientific information to specific HCPs to increase awareness around key scientific concepts regarding Novo Nordisk (NN) marketed products that can be leveraged by field commercial personnel to help achieve their objectives.
  • Consistently uses established KOL network of HCPs, institutions, researchers etc. for opportunities to leverage that will increase NNCI exposure in key established therapeutic areas and areas of future interest.
  • Establishes medical and scientific expertise and maintains high professional credibility and ethical standards in interactions with all customers to be seen as a reliable medical, scientific resource by stakeholders.
  • Acts as a clinical and therapeutic resource in assigned therapeutic area within the CDMR Department (Clinical Development, Medical & Regulatory) by developing and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current, investigational and competitor products to provide support, guidance and therapeutic expertise to Sales staff, Medical Affairs and Marketing.
  • Support the pre-launch activities for NN\'s pipeline products by increasing awareness on future products through medical and scientific support to HCPs, payers as well as other relevant associations within an assigned geographic region
  • Provides scientific expertise, advice, and guidance to KOL faculty during KOL advisory boards, and Regional Consultant Meetings (RCMs) to support NNCI\'s objectives.
  • Identifies KOLs within each therapeutic area/medical specialty and recommends membership to International and local Advisory Panels to enhance the quality of the information gathered during these activities.
  • Prepares and conducts ongoing product and scientific updates (SUs) to HCPs within the assigned region to raise scientific awareness and understanding of NN products.
  • Recommends potential investigators for clinical protocols and under the direction of Clinical Operations, supports customer contact/management to maintain high NN clinical research quality standards in Canada.
  • Leverages insight from the field and a wide variety of sources to identify and recruit established and developing global, national, and regional thought leaders.
  • Manages a territory budget including capacity, other learning programs (OLAs) and scientific updates\' costs to maximize NNCI\'s medical and scientific impact with customers.
  • Participates in scientific and medical conferences by engaging KOL attendees and reporting and communicating on new medical and scientific developments to internal and external stakeholders to maintain high level of therapeutic area knowledge and credibility.
  • Represents NN in a professional manner at scientific congresses by showcasing scientific expertise and credibility by presenting NN research either as poster/oral presentations to increase reach, understanding and dissemination of new NNCI study information.
  • Collaborates cross functionally with Sales and Marketing and attends internal meetings outside of medical in order to offer in house training support which enhances and maintains the MSL understanding of all current NNCI strategies and to ensure proper strategic alignment between business units.
Education & Experience:
  • M.D, PharmD, Ph.D.,
  • Minimum 3 years relevant pharmaceutical industry experience or minimum 5 years of professional work experience in a scientific or medical discipline
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively in French in English
  • Previous experience as an MSL desired.
  • Prior experience in clinical practice and/or research in therapeutic areas of interest to NNCI is strongly desired.
  • Previous experience in NNCI\'s therapeutic areas of expertise would be an asset
