Job Description


Dalhousie University\'s Office of Advancement is responsible for all fundraising and alumni engagement activities at the institution. A team of over 100 advancement professionals cultivate relationships with alumni and friends of the university and work with donors to help them achieve personal fulfilment through philanthropic investment. Dalhousie donors commit in aggregate over $70 million each year in the interest of supporting student success, scientific research, and community impact. Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement, Faculty of Medicine, the Medical Research Communications Officer plays a critical role in interpreting and communicating research impact and investment opportunities in the Faculty of Medicine, enhancing the University\'s relationships with stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develops strong relationships with Faculty of Medicine researchers, maintains a comprehensive understanding of ongoing and new research initiatives, and serves as the primary liaison between the Advancement team and researchers.
  • Produces a variety of plain language materials for diverse audiences (both internal and external) by synthesizing research projects, outcomes and societal impacts, by meeting with researchers, reviewing grant submissions, and attending events. These include project summaries, impact stories, stakeholder accountability materials, briefing notes, public communications, website content, background for media requests, social media content and other resources to support revenue development activities.
  • Reports on the impact of the faculty\'s funded research to enhance the profile of the Faculty with the public, donors, media, and other key internal audiences.
  • Communicates research trends and their implications to a wide variety of audiences through multiple vehicles.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of donor stewardship activities and materials for donor funded research initiatives to meet commitments to donors and other partners and to clearly demonstrate the impact of their contributions.
Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a communications related discipline or science plus a minimum of five years of experience in research communications and knowledge translation (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience in working within a medical research and university environment, building strong professional relationships with subject matter experts.
  • Excellent synthesis and writing skills, and ability to communicate complex scientific concepts for a variety of audiences and vehicles that are engaging and compelling.
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and ability to interact with diplomacy and tact with colleagues, the general public, as well as individuals in the scientific community.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, and online search tools, including PubMed and grey literature.
Assets
  • A knowledge of philanthropy and relationship based fundraising and related functions including methodologies for cultivating and stewarding donors.
  • If education is in science, additional communications training is preferred.
