About the role:

The Radiation Medicine Program at Southlake Health treats approximately 1200 patients each year. The department consists of 5 Elekta medical linear accelerators as well as a Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT Simulator. The Treatment Planning System is RayStation. The linacs deliver image-guided radiation using integrated cone-beam computed tomography. High precision radiation treatments are routinely delivered with step and shoot intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT).

The importance of nomenclature standardization in Radiation Oncology has been acknowledged. The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) has provided guidelines for standardizing nomenclature of structure names and dosimetric data in Radiation Oncology in their Task Group 263 (TG-263) document. Ontario Health-Cancer Care Ontario (OH-CCO) has identified standardization of nomenclature as a priority quality initiative and has formed a provincial Radiation Treatment Planning Nomenclature Standardization Working Group to guide and support implementation of the recommendations of AAPM TG-263. OH-CCO will require routine nomenclature standardization compliance report submission. We are implementing a tool to audit nomenclature standardization compliance of structure names in RayStation, our Treatment Planning System (TPS).

Our radiation oncology department is seeking a motivated student or early-career developer to help implement a standardized structure-naming system (AAPM TG-263) within our clinical treatment-planning database.

The successful candidate will develop an automated audit and reporting tool that checks whether existing treatment plans and structure names comply with TG-263 conventions. This project sits at the intersection of computer science, physics, and medicine, offering the opportunity to apply programming skills to real-world healthcare challenges that directly impact data quality and patient safety.

What you'll be doing:

Develop a

Python-based auditing tool

to analyze treatment plans exported from the RayStation (or equivalent) treatment-planning system. Compare structure and plan nomenclature against the

AAPM TG-263

standard list. Generate automated

summary reports

identifying non-compliant structures and suggesting compliant replacements. Collaborate with medical physicists to interpret TG-263 guidelines and map them to the clinic's existing structure library. Document the software logic, workflow, and results clearly for future clinical integration.

What you bring:

Intermediate experience with Python (data handling, string parsing, and basic GUI or reporting libraries). Comfortable working with spreadsheets, CSV, or XML/DICOM data. Strong attention to detail and ability to learn domain-specific rules. Good communication skills and documentation practices. ###
