About the Role
The
Medical Officer, Gender and Public Health (0.6 FTE)
provides essential physician leadership in gender health - including women's health, maternal and child health, men's health, and 2S/LGBTQQIA+ health, as well as population health and wellness, health systems transformation including the advancement of Cultural Safety and Humility and addressing Anti-Indigenous racism, and public health services for BC First Nations at provincial, regional and local levels. This position is instrumental in maintaining strong collaboration across FNHA and the regions, particularly in maternal child health.
The Medical Officer provides centralized and strategic focus to promote and protect the health and wellness of BC First Nation peoples and communities. This position operates as a subject matter expert (SME) on health policy and population and public health in a First Nations context and as a champion for First Nations philosophy and approach to women's health and maternal child health.
The Medical Officer directly supports regional and community priorities by providing clinical and public health leadership in gender health, which is a foundational component of culturally safe care for First Nations communities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Provides physician leadership strategic advice related to gender health including women's health and maternal child health, men's health, and 2S/LGBTQQIA+ health, and public health for BC First Nations on a provincial, regional and local scale, as needed, to serve the needs of the OCMO.
Builds and maintain strong partnerships and networks to ensure sustained collaboration and focus on First Nations health and wellness with an emphasis on gender and public health. Works in collaboration with a diverse and wide array of health system partners regionally, nationally and internationally, and acts in an advocacy role for First Nations in BC.
Provides subject matter expertise including gender and public health knowledge, insight and information to members of the FNHA.
Provides expert advise on gender related health, public health, and cultural safety and humility for the BC First Nations population.
Provides on-call services on a rotating basis with other medical officers. Provides clinical expertise to emergency planning and response.
Participates fully in systemic health services planning processes and maintains communications with other health care providers, government and professional health organizations to ensure reasonable access to provincial programs and services to achieve improved health and wellness outcomes for BC First Nations.
Supports the strengthening of the practice of cultural safety and humility among physicians and other health and wellness service providers delivering care to First Nations individuals and communities.
Works in support of the CEO, CMO, and in collaboration with COO and Regional VP's, representing FNHA on external committees and organizations, at media events and to community groups on public health issues or emergencies affecting the health of BC First Nations people.
Provides gender health and public health leadership perspectives on First Nations health and wellness programs and services including in the development and executive of strategic and operational plans.
Expected and trusted to develop a greater depth of understanding and knowledge of First Nations cultures.
Understands and respects First Nations cultural principles and protocols and apply this understanding in work situations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
About You
To be successful in this role you will:
have a medical degree recognized in Canada and post-graduate training in public health or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
be eligible for a full license to practice medicine in BC.
a CCFP in Family Medicine or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons certification is an asset.
significant, recent and relevant experience (usually acquired over a period of three years or more, experience in gender related health or public health preferred).
significant, recent and relevant experience in Indigenous settings is an asset (usually acquired over a period of three years).

The Pay Range is the minimum and maximum annual salary based on full time equivalent hours.
Incumbents are typically hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the range based on their knowledge, skills, abilities and experience in relation to the role requirements.
The top 10% of the pay range is for the incumbents who are industry experts in the job with the combination of exceptional experience and competencies needed to perform all duties and responsibilities at a superior capability level. Internal employee compensation will be determined as per the FNHA Employee Total Compensation Policy.
