Job Description

NATURE AND SCOPE

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as well as the Medical Director, the Medical Manager assumes a dual role as both a leader and an active participant in the medical team at TRC. This multifaceted position entails providing comprehensive leadership, direction, and support while overseeing quality control and ensuring the provision of safe medical services across the continuum of care. As a working manager, the Medical Manager is expected to be present on the nursing floor when office work is not required and to step in to cover shifts if necessary, ensuring continuity of care.

As a trusted and highly respected professional nurse, the Medical Manager serves individuals, families, and groups, assessing their needs and delivering care and treatment within their scope of practice. They are responsible for overseeing the team of LPNs, RNs, RPNs, and HCAs, promoting the highest quality nursing care services for clients, and fostering effective communication across team members and multi-disciplinary teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES



Providing general oversight for the medically supported detox unit and nursing services for program clients, with regular reporting to the Medical Director. Offering on-call support for staff as needed. Collaborating with the Medical Director to provide leadership and strategic direction for health-related services and projects. Overseeing departmental training in alignment with TRC's policies and procedures, including onboarding of new medical staff and ensuring HR compliance. Developing ongoing relationships with Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers. Facilitating case conferencing between family, patients, and staff, with direct communication and updates to the Medical Director. Assisting the Medical Director with TRC's day-to-day medical operations. Ensuring efficient, effective, and high-quality services are delivered to TRC patients and families by the medical team. Ensuring medical staff at TRC utilize the EMR according to safe and competent standards. Conducting quarterly pharmacy documentation, order processing, and patient outcome audits, with reports shared with the Medical Director. Monitoring resource utilization and making changes within their scope to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Overseeing and assisting nursing staff with the delivery of health-related programs and content. Performing regular/regulated RN duties as per the TRC RN job description, balancing administrative responsibilities with direct client care as needed. Reporting and documenting incidents, adverse events, and near misses according to practice setting guidelines and policies. Demonstrating proficiency in operating, storing, and maintaining health equipment safely. Assessing, monitoring, and recognizing patients' needs for substance use withdrawal management "detox" and post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and being familiar with treatments for substance use disorders. Completing all required training and education prior to commencing patient care. Overseeing RNs facilitating emergency situations and supporting all medical staff with de-escalation skills and mental health crisis management. Assisting the Medical Director and Clinical Director with accreditation Canada and medical policy and procedure continuity or needed attention. Assisting with responses to overdose emergencies or any other medical emergencies, including CPR/defibrillator use, stroke, seizure, and heart attack. Conducting regular audits with care plan implementation and communication utility among medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS



o Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), Bachelor of Nursing program, or an accredited Psychiatric Nursing program and must provide proof of completion upon request. Must be fully registered and hold an active, non-restrictive license/permit with CRNA, CRPNA, or CLPNA.

A minimum of three (3) years of recent full-time Canadian experience as an RN, RPN, or LPN is required. Experience in a care manager role within the health care sector, preferably in addictions and mental health, is an asset. Suboxone and Sublocade Course must be completed within the first three months of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Standard First Aid and CPR certification is required. Experience with addictions and mental health treatment(s). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse groups. Experience with CIWA-Ar, COWS, Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), detoxification, withdrawal management, and basic recovery programming is required. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the last five (5) years is preferred. Must not have any restrictions on license and must adhere to all provincial and federal regulations, as well as college scope of care standards. Must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon hire and every two (2) years thereafter. Must provide a valid driver's license and a current driver's abstract upon hire. Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including weekdays and weekends.
All employees must complete Naloxone training and other mandatory trainings within the first three months of employment.
